Not Your Model Minority

The Robert Crown Law Library and the Asian and Pacific Islander Law Students Association (APILSA) invite you to celebrate and experience some of the incredible books in our collection for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The books listed on this site are only a sampling of the Stanford Libraries' collection. If you would like additional reading recommendations, please reach out to reference@law.stanford.edu.

You are able to check out any book listed on this site! Loan periods and request processing time may vary depending on which campus library the book comes from. But regardless of whether a book is at Green, Law, or any of the other campus libraries, you can request the book through the form linked on this site and make an appointment to pick it up in front of the Crown building. Or, if you are unable to pick up material in person or would like to review a section of a publication for longer than the check out period, please request a scan of the section you are interested in. Keep in mind that scan requests are subject to copyright.

What is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month?

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrates the diverse Asian and Pacific Island cultures that have found their way to America.

The celebration of Asian Pacific American heritage began in 1978, when President Jimmy Carter signed off on a joint resolution authorizing a ten-day long celebration in early May. Since then, the celebration has grown into a month-long celebration of Asian and Pacific Americans’ achievements and accomplishments to society.

And we invite all of you to celebrate with us, too! This book display is meant to play a small but important role in that celebration. In a time that has become fraught with divisiveness, fear, and xenophobia, it is more important than ever to recognize the diverse and impactful works of Asian and Pacific Islander authors. Their voices describe their unique experiences in a way which is both deeply rooted in the Asian and Pacific Islander experience, yet is at the same time distinctly and authentically American.

What is APILSA?

The Asian and Pacific Islander Law Students Association (APLISA) is a community geared towards activities that promote the interests of Asian and Pacific Islander law students as well as the larger Asian and Pacific Islander communities. To create a supportive environment for Asian and Pacific Islander law students, APILSA organizes welcome activities for first-year law students and often coordinates get-togethers with other law student groups. APILSA also provides academic assistance and advice to students conducting job searches.

APILSA is also involved in promoting the interests of the Asian and Pacific Islander legal community more generally. We have worked with the Asian Community Immigration Clinic, hosted speakers to present on Asian and Pacific Islander issues, and are part of the larger Bay Area Asian Pacific American Law Students Association.
