Welcome to 8th Grade Honors U.S. History! Below you will find your Summer Assignment. This will be due the first week of school, so please do NOT wait to get this started!
Essential Question: How do historians use different types of sources to learn about the past?
Topic: My 7th Grade Year Through a Historian's Eyes
Step 1: Gather Sources
Primary sources are created during the event. Choose at least 2 of the following as your primary sources.
Primary Sources
Examples of primary sources:
Photographs
Report cards or progress reports
Progress reports self-reflections
School projects or assignments (go to Schoology, click on Courses, then click on My Courses on the right side, then click on Archived to see your 7th grade classes)
Awards or certificates
Yearbook pages
Artwork
Secondary sources explain or describe events after they happened. Your secondary source will be an interview of someone who witnessed your school year. You may choose to include additional secondary sources
Examples of secondary sources:
Interview with a parent, guardian, sibling, cousin, teacher, coach, or friend about YOUR school year
School website article
School Schoology Post
Step 2: Conduct an Interview
Interview one person who knows you well.
What is your strongest memory of MY school year?
What is something I improved at this year?
What accomplishment of mine are you most proud of?
What advice would you give me for next year?
What do you think I enjoyed most this school year?
What was my favorite hobby or activity to do?
Who were some of my closest friends?
What was my favorite TV show/Movie?
What was my favorite snack or meal?
What was I most excited about in relation to school?
Record their answers. This can be typed or handwritten.
Step 3: Create Your Project
Choose ONE of the following project options:
Create 6–8 slides including:
Title Slide
Important Events
Academic Achievement
Personal Growth
Interview Highlights (step 2)
Self Reflection (step 4)
Photos of Primary and Secondary sources
Create a timeline showing at least 8 important events from the school year. This can be done on 2-3 pieces of printer paper, or poster paper.
Timeline: A chart or line that shows important events in the order they happened over a period of time.
For this project, your timeline should show the most important events from your previous school year in chronological order (from the beginning of the year to the end of the year). Your interview and self reflection can be attached or separate.
Create a visual poster that includes:
Important events
Photos and/or illustrations
Academic achievements
Personal achievements
Interview (step 2)
Self Reflection (step 4)
Step 4: Self Reflection
Write at least one paragraph reflecting on the following questions:
What was the most important event of your school year?
What did you learn from your experiences?
How did you grow academically and personally?
How will these experiences help you next year?
Your interview and self-reflection will be apart of whichever option you chose.
Again, this will be turned in to your teacher during the first week of school, once you are in your class.
