This course covers all of the CC Mathematics Grade 6 standards.
Students will learn concepts from the following five areas:
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
The Number System
Expressions and Equations
Geometry
Statistics and Probability
A key part of the CCSS is to have students work together, think conceptually, and describe how they solve problems. Rather than simply asking students to memorize a bunch of steps to arrive at an answer, the goal is to help students make sense of why they are following those steps and gain a deeper understanding of the concepts behind the steps they follow. My goal is for every student to become a curious thinker and achieve deep learning in mathematics in a growth mindset environment.

Unit 1: I can solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area and volume. (6.G.1, 6.G.2)
Unit 2: I can understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to describe the ratio relationship between two quantities and can find the unit rate using tapes, tables, and number lines. (6RP1, 6RP2, 6RP3a)
Unit 3: I can understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems using tables and the coordinate plane, unit rate, percent, and converting measurement units. (6RP2, 6.RP.3b, 6RP3c, 6RP3d)
Unit 4: I can use fraction division to solve real-world and mathematical problems, including problems involving volume. (6.NS.1, 6.G.2)
Unit 5: I can compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and decimals and find the GCF and LCM. (6.NS.2, 6.NS.3, 6.NS.4)

Throughout the school year, students will complete FIABs—Formative Interim Assessment Blocks—to help monitor their understanding of key grade-level standards. These short, standards-aligned assessments provide valuable insight into student progress and help identify areas that need more support.
FIABs are an important part of preparing for the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), which students take at the end of the year. They give students practice with the types of questions and test format used on the SBA, helping build confidence and familiarity.
FIABs are not graded for accuracy, but are used for reflection, goal setting, and review. Students will track their own progress to better understand their learning and set meaningful academic goals.
