Welcome to the Monroe Community of Schools!

What is a Community of Schools?

This school year, the Los Angeles Unified School District has reorganized into 42 Communities of Schools. Each Community of Schools, or COS, consists of a group of schools centered around a neighborhood and is structured to be as responsive as possible to the distinct needs of that neighborhood. The Monroe COS covers the neighborhoods of North Hills and Panorama City, with one school in Van Nuys and two in Northridge. Click here for a list of all our schools and their websites.

Our offices are located on the campus of Sepulveda Middle School, on Plummer Street near the corner of Columbus Avenue, and we are here to be of service. Our COS Assistant, Sue DeLeo, will be more than happy to answer your questions and give you and your children the support needed to be successful with distance learning. Give us a call, send us an email, or fill out our contact form if we can be of service to you.

Meet the Monroe Community of Schools Team

Cara Schneider, Administrator

It is my honor to serve as your Administrator for the Monroe Community of Schools. I am a proud alumna of the Los Angeles Unified School District, having attended Melrose Elementary, Bancroft Junior High, and Fairfax High School. As the youngest child in a family of five, I was the first to be born in this country and, like many of our Monroe COS students, grew up speaking more than one language. That experience taught me the value and importance of being bilingual and bi-cultural.

After graduating from UCLA, I served as a teacher and Coordinator in the Hollywood area for 18 years. I then moved to the Valley, and was fortunate to serve as the Assistant Principal of Liggett Elementary in Panorama City and then as the Principal of Noble Elementary in North Hills, where I developed a deep appreciation for the strength of this community and the wonderful families that work hard each day to provide the very best for their children.

I look forward to working with you and for you as your Administrator as we continue to do what is right for our students.

Rocio Saldaña, Instructional Coordinator

Welcome to the Monroe Community of Schools family!

I am proud to serve as the Instructional Coordinator for this wonderful unit of schools, educators, students, and their families. My passion for education comes from my unique experience as a child, which reinstates my daily belief in people’s sense of responsibility and altruistic ways. Raised by immigrant parents who were foreign to the complexities of our education system, I owe much of my success to an entire community of individuals who recognized my gifts, equipped me with the right tools, and mentored me in a direction to reach my goals. This is the type of community that I envision for our students in the Monroe Community of Schools.

My studies at UCLA have grounded my commitment to providing a socially just education that holds high standards for every learner and prepares them with the necessary knowledge, courage, and grit to succeed. It is with joy that I center my efforts on empowering teachers, coaches, and administrators to implement effective instructional practices that foster engaging learning environments for our students. I am committed to support, learn, and exchange ideas alongside all members of our Monroe Community of Schools, to grow as one.

Temo Arroyo, Operations Coordinator

As your Operations Coordinator, I support the Monroe and Taft Community of Schools to ensure that every school is safe and provides an environment that is conducive to learning. I have worked with LAUSD for almost 20 years and have held various educational roles to support student learning. I started in the District as an elementary teacher working at 75th Street Elementary in South Los Angeles where I taught both in the primary and upper grades. I have also served as a Categorical Program Advisor, Assistant Principal, Title I Coordinator for the Local District, and Principal at an Elementary School in the San Fernando Valley.

I am very excited to be working with our Monroe Community of School principals, teachers, and parent partners to build academic excellence at our schools through coherence, collaboration, high expectations and accountability.

Alana Burton, Systems of Support Adviser

My preferred pronouns are Dr./she/her/hers. As Systems of Support Adviser (SOS) to Monroe Community of Schools, I bring 16 years of educational experience serving early childhood centers through high schools in my roles as: teacher, Restorative Justice Teacher Adviser, School Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Member, Student Support and Progress Team Member, Gifted and Talented Education Coordinator, United Teachers Los Angeles Chair, Grade Level Chair, Instructional Team Member, School Site Council Member, Charter School Board of Directors Member, and Safety Committee Member.

Combining my educational leadership and psychology doctorate background with continuous professional growth, I dig deep and authentically connect with others. This connection helps me strengthen individual and collective assets and close gaps to achieve goals, spark creativity, and build resilience. My lens is restorative, diverse, equitable, inclusive, mindful, data driven, and solution-based. I use my social-emotional intelligence and grit mindset to inspire, strategize, collaborate, support, and positively impact the whole person, whole school, and whole community.

When not intentionally working, I spend quality time with my two young adult children and fur family. I love mindful rituals, unicorns, and everything that sparks joy.

Sue DeLeo, COS Assistant

Greetings Monroe Community of Schools,

My name is Sue and I am happy to serve as your Monroe Community of Schools Parent Education Support Assistant, also known as the COS Assistant. My journey in Education began eight years ago when I first became a parent volunteer for my three sons. I enjoyed helping and being a part of the school dynamics, but mostly being a positive support system between my children and the school. I have learned a lot throughout the years, not only as a volunteer, but also as an employee working inside and outside the classroom, meeting such wonderful teachers, aides, office staff, custodians, principals, directors, parents, and children.

The Monroe Community of Schools is here to assist our families as best we can, with any need they may have or any inquiry they may want to ask. I am looking forward to meeting our wonderful families, and more importantly to sharing my knowledge and assisting with building a stronger bridge between our schools and our community.

Morena Camp, Parent & Community Education (PACE) Coach

I was born in El Salvador, Central America and moved to the United States at age 9. I have an older brother and a younger sister. I am married and have three beautiful children. I am the first one in my family to attend and graduate from college.

I am a product of LAUSD schools: Valerio Elementary, Robert Fulton Junior High, and Van Nuys High School. I graduated from CSUN with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology, a K-12 mild to moderate teaching credential, and a master’s in education.

I have been working in LAUSD for almost 21 years. My career began as a teacher’s assistant. I then became a teacher for 11 years, a Title I and EL Coordinator for 4 years. I am currently starting my 5th year as a Parent Educator Coach. I have learned and enjoyed all my job assignments. All these responsibilities have taught me the value of hard work, being flexible, putting in the hours to get it done and knowing that anything is possible if you really want it. Perhaps one of the most important lessons I have learned over the years is that parent involvement in a child’s education is one of the most important elements to their success.

I look forward to working with the Monroe Community and being a part of this journey with our students, families, and school communities.

Heather Miles, Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) Specialist

I am a career educator with LAUSD. I began as a teacher working in the primary grades before transitioning to the role of School Psychologist. I worked in this capacity with both public and nonpublic students, preschool through high school. Before taking my current role, I also worked as an Assistant Principal EIS.

My role as the LRE Specialist is to provide assistance and professional development to school leadership and CoS staff – primarily administrators – regarding academic, social and behavioral support; the IEP process and developing healthy school-wide systems; multi-tiered systems of support, and addressing school-site and parent concerns regarding inclusion and Special Education.

Vanessa Frnzyan, Program Specialist

I currently live in Van Nuys with my husband and three children, who all attend schools in Local District Northwest. I have been working for LAUSD for 29 years. I began as a Special Education Assistant in 1991 at Cleveland High School, during which time I attended school and completed my degree and credential for Mild/Moderate Education Specialist. I then began teaching at Cleveland High School, and soon after I was asked to be the Bridge Coordinator. During that time I completed my Master's Degree and Administrative Credential. Three years ago I applied for the Program Specialist position and am excited to serve the community in this capacity.

My role as Program Specialist is to provide guidance to our Special Education teachers and paraprofessionals, as well as, from a classroom or student-specific lens, to address the needs of students with disabilities regarding academic, social and behavioral supports and inclusion.

Title 3 Coaches

Our Title 3 Coaches build the capacity of teachers and other instructional staff and provide schools with support to ensure that all English Learner (EL) students develop proficiency in academic English.
