This book takes place in the Gilded Age of New York, at a time when high class New York society reigns supreme over all else. We follow Newland Archer, a young "dilettante" of a man engaged to be wed to May Welland. All is going well in his world until the foreign Ellen Olenska, Mays cousin, arrives after fleeing her abusive husband. He finds himself entranced by her general disregard for the social customs of their uppity New York society and soon embarks on a whirlwind of emotions and questioning of the society he's grown so used to.
This book was good! It's a satirical novel with interesting and complex characters and equally interesting dynamics between all of them. The language is a bit rich and the writing style can be overly-detailed, which can turn a person off a bit. But I guarantee that the book is worth the read.
