Integrated Science Syllabus
8th Grade Mr. Nunez Room 4-201
Class Description:
This course is guided by the Next Generations Science Standards that actively engage in scientific and engineering practices and apply crosscutting concepts to deepen student’s understanding of core ideas in these fields. Students are required to work like scientists and engineers to explore the various concepts and natural phenomenon that will be presented. Students at MaCES will be scientifically literate individuals who are valuable contributors by collaborating, collecting and evaluating information on global and local issues; able to analyze evidence and formulate feasible solutions as future Scientists, Engineers, and informed citizens.
Materials required Everyday
We will use Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's online science curriculum where students will have access to materials and virtual labs along with other resources and supplemental materials.

Homework:
Homework will be assigned every other day at least twice a week. It is important that students keep track of their assignments . Schoology calendar and the online agenda will be used as reminders.
Late Work Policy
Late or make-up assignments can be turned in the next day or the following class period, with a valid excuse.
Expectations/ Class Rules
1. Raise your hand for permission. (i.e. restroom, materials, etc.)
2. Be on time and in your seat when the bell rings and come to school prepared. (i.e. charged chromebook, materials, rested)
3. Keep you hands, objects, and more importantly comments to yourself.
4. Follow School Wide Positive Behavior Plan: BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE, BE RESPECTFUL, BE SCHOLARLY
Students should be on time and be prepared. (i.e. materials, H.W. and well rested)

NO PHONE AND HEADPHONES POLICY: PHONES SECURED IN YONDER POUCH AND MUST BE IN YOUR BACKPACK OUT OF SIGHT. USE OF PHONES IS PROHIBITED PER LAUSD POLICY AND WILL BE CONFISCATED AND DELIVERED TO THEIR COUNSELOR, OFFICE, OR ADMINISTRATION. PHONE CALL HOME WILL BE MADE.
Students should communicate with the teacher if they are having difficulties after class or speak to their counselor.

Mastery Grading:
Mastery Grading is a system of grading where students are allowed to demonstrate their level of mastery of skills and content. Students will be allowed to master Next Generation Standards skills and content along with Common Core State Standards in writing and Speaking. Some sssignments will be graded on a scale of 1-4, with 1 being “no mastery demonstrated”, 2 very little mastery demonstrated, 3 proficient mastery demonstrated, 4 meets and exceeds mastery. Students will be given feedback on how to improve performance and an opportunity to demonstrate the skill or knowledge by retaking tests, redoing assignments and or given more time. Rubrics and scoring guides will be aligned with Learning Objectives so students can achieve mastery and succeed in school. Resources and support can be provided to help students achieve mastery.
