Practicum placements provide university/college(IHE) students (candidates) with experiences that meet IHE requirements and introduce them to essential facets of the profession in the educational setting. The process map below shows a visual representation of the actions required to secure placement for a practicum/field experience in LAUSD. Note that before starting any of the required actions, the IHE must have an active Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Candidates seeking a placement at an LAUSD school site MUST receive a fingerprint clearance email from the IHE or the Teacher Development and Support (TDAS) Branch before the start of practicum field experiences.
Since the founding of the first public school in Los Angeles in 1885, the Los Angeles Unified School District has grown to encompass 710 square miles and approximately 1,500 school campuses. Approximately, 4.5 million people live within LA Unified's boundaries. As of Fall 2023, English and 154 languages are spoken by students at Los Angeles Unified Schools. Today, LA Unified is the second largest district in the nation and is led by Alberto M. Carvalho as Superintendent.
The educators in the Los Angeles Unified District reflect the vibrancy, diversity, and energy of Los Angeles itself. Los Angeles Unified is the second-largest employer in Los Angeles County. We are pleased to welcome you to our district as a student teacher and hope your experience will support your goal of becoming a member of this noble profession. We look forward to your joining us as a fully credentialed teacher.

As LAUSD is streamlining all programs (Student Teaching, Counseling, Psychology, Speech and Language, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Administration, etc) under one agreement, MOUs will be drafted using an LAUSD template with exhibits.
If you wish to update the terms and conditions, contact information, or signatories, please send an edited copy of the using an LAUSD MOU template for review and approval by the Teacher Development and Support Branch and other applicable LAUSD departments.
The MOU renewal process timeline varies. We suggest starting the renewal process nine (9) months prior to expiration of prior MOU.
To renew an MOU, send an email request to Maria Butler at murbin2@lausd.net and cc: Andrew Kim at tak1636@lausd.net.
