Canoga Park Library

Dear Teachers and Students,

The job aid below is the new way for students to access the digital library through Schoology.

PLS_Job_Aid_Student_Success_Card.docx

See you in the library!

Mrs. Werner

If a teacher wants a Teacher Card, but they do not have a regular library card they should visit a local branch so they can get both at the same time.  If a teacher has a regular library card, but not a Teacher Card, then they can fill out the Teacher Card Form (linked here) and they will be issued a Teacher Card.  They do need to show proof they are a teacher though.  Yes, the retrieval form is only for students to get their Student Success Card information.

Student Success Cards

All LAUSD students already have a Student Success Card, which is a library card through the Los Angeles Public Library.  To access the free digital resources offered by LAPL, you don't need a physical card - all you need is your card number!  To find out what your card number is, complete a verification form and you will receive your information via the e-mail you provide.

You can also ask Mrs. Werner in the library.

Use your Student Success Card to access a wealth of digital resources including e-books, homework help, music, and more!

Udemy

We have added the online learning platform Udemy to our offerings.  Our state funded subscription to Coursera is set to expire in fall 2024, so Udemy should help fill that void (signups for state funded Skillshare access also closed last month.)  Udemy (via Gale) provides access to self directed video courses on job skills, software applications and also personal development topics like time management, emotional intelligence and various hobbies.  The interface can be toggled to display in multiple languages, and users can filter for course offerings in languages including Spanish, Japanese, Russian and Chinese.

Supersonic Phonics and Decodables by Jump! on OverDrive/Libby

We now have simultaneous use access (no waitlists) to a collection of children's ebook titles supporting literacy growth from PreK to 4th grade from Bearport Publishing and Jump!  These two phonics/decodables packages include over 200 titles which begin with the very basics of phonetically decodable reading and increase in sentence structure complexity as the reader works through the series.

New Manga on hoopla

Content from DC Manga and Kodansha has been added on hoopla.

Universal Class leaving Libby

Universal Class is no longer partnering with OverDrive, so the platform will no longer be accessible via Libby as of December 1.  Our direct link to Universal Class posted on the Online Learning page remains active.

Dear Students and Staff,

1.  Banned Book Week is upon us!  Flex your right-to-read muscle and check out a book from our special display.

2.  LAPL is launching a special initiative during Banned Books Week–Read Freely with Los Angeles Public Library.  Through the end of 2023, we are making a selection of e-book titles from ALA’s Most Challenged Books lists available nationwide to readers 13 years and older. With this initiative, LAPL is lending our support to communities and libraries facing censorship nationwide and championing every individual’s right to read freely.

Users will create a Read Freely card at this link–successful applicants will receive their e-card number instantly and can begin using the collection on Libby (please note this is an entirely separate collection/site from our LAPL Libby collection).

The Read Freely library cards will appear in CARL with borrower type BANNED BOOK BORROWER and a card number that begins with BCARD.

*Read Freely is a limited collection of titles available to a nationwide audience.  Local patrons should continue to use our full-service library card or e-card for L.A. City residents that will allow access to all of our digital offerings and physical collections, including our full LAPL OverDrive/Libby collection.

See you in the library!

Thursdays, October 19 – November 9, 2023, 7:00 pm – 9:00pm ET

PEN America and the Brooklyn Public Library are teaming up to co-host the return of our Freedom to Read Advocacy Institute for the fall 2023 semester! This online, four-week educational and training program for high school students will prepare and certify the next generation of free expression advocates to combat book banning and fight for the freedom to read in their schools, libraries and communities across the country.

The weekly schedule will include presentations delivered by professional literary and students’ rights activists, interactive workshops designed to teach tangible skills, and simulation activities to dive deeper into the issues with their peers. Participants will cap their experiences by attending a final keynote panel and discussion with several authors of banned books and submitting written advocacy commitment essays as final projects. Students who successfully complete the program will also be granted a certificate of professional achievement in freedom to read advocacy from PEN America and Brooklyn Public Library.

Dear Students and Staff,

1.  Don't forget that the Canoga Park Library Teen Council will begin meeting Tuesday, September 19th @ 4:30 in the community room.  11-18 year-olds are welcome.

2.  The San Fernando Valley Youth Chorus is still accepting participants.  More info at

https://www.valleyyouthchorus.org/

3.  On Monday September 18th, LAUSD will have the Student Success Card information available for students to access from their Schoology Profiles.  They will be able to see their card number AND their PIN numbers when they log into their Schoology accounts.  There will also be a link for the Student Success Card Retrieval Form in case a student's card information is not found in their profile.

If a student is newly enrolled as of Tuesday-Friday during any week, they will not have a Student Success Card issued to them for at least 2-3 weeks because that is how long it takes for the district to add that student to their database and share the information with LAPL.

Re: Changes to LAUSD Digital Library Databases

Dear Teachers,

This message is to inform you that there have been changes in how to access the LAUSD Digital Library databases. The Digital Library databases can now be accessed by you and your students through Schoology under the waffle icon labeled Los Angeles Public Library.

Students will be able to log in with their Student Success Card.  If they do not have their Student Success Cards they could get an e-card by filling out this form https://www.lapl.org/studentsuccess/verification   Teachers can also fill out a Teacher form using the link provided https://lapl.org/studentsuccess/teacher-card

Once you log in you click on the database tab at the top of the screen and the databases should repopulate.  I am sorry for this inconvenience however this decision was made downtown.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions,

4.  Hey!  We have some new things available through our LAPL e-resources:

Skillshare access ending

Access to Skillshare via the California State Library is winding down.  September 30, 2023 will be the last day patrons can sign up for their free 12-month Skillshare subscription through the link on our Online Learning page (only one license is provided per unique user--learners do not have the option to sign-up for an additional license after the expiration of their first.)  Access will continue for patrons who manage to sign up by the deadline, but no new accounts can be created, and the link will be removed from our website.

"Magazine Rack" coming soon to Libby

Libby users will soon see their borrowed magazines in a "Magazine Rack" section of their interface, separate from their e-book and audiobook loans.  They will also be able to subscribe to their favorite titles so they have automatic access to the latest issue.

USA Today added to PressReader

USA Today (US and International editions) is now available on PressReader.

MasterClass, Manga, Hallmark Movies and Puzzle Palace on hoopla

hoopla is starting to add video content from the popular online education subscription platform MasterClass.  Videos added thus far include classes by Neil deGrasse Tyson, Walter Mosely and Neil Gaiman.

hoopla has also recently added manga titles from an expanded list of publishers.

They also have added a BingePass giving unlimited 7 day access to the Hallmark Movie catalog.  More holiday movies than you can shake a stick at!

And finally, they've added a BingePass for a platform called Puzzle Palace.  Patrons can use one of their monthly hoopla borrows to access this puzzle platform for 7 days at a time--activities include Sudoku and crossword puzzles.

5.  With this year’s Poetry, Prose, and Parks! theme for Write Out 2023, we invite you to imagine what's possible given your place, time, and context.  To help you think about the possibilities, the Write Out team will be hosting a couple of information sessions in September. These are open for registration through the Write Now Teacher Studio. If you prefer not to join The Studio (it's free), you can also email us with your interest at writeout@nwp.org and we will send you the links directly.

At the information sessions we will share what Write Out has looked like in different parts of the country and help you brainstorm how it might work for you.

See you in the library!

Mrs. Werner

A little bit about myself I graduated from Cal State University Northridge with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies and a Master’s Degree in Administration.  I went back to college to get my Librarian Credential from Cal State Long Beach and have been a librarian for over 11 years.  Before that I had been a teacher for over 20 years. I have worked at the Elementary, Middle, and now High School level for the past 6 years.

I have been married now for 25 years and have two grown kids, Vienna, 23 and Tristan, 21.  They are now both in university completing their degrees.  On my free time I love to surf, garden, play ukulele and read books.  When I’m not reading or hanging out with my friends and family you could usually find me at the beach surfing or reading a good book.
