I'm excited to have you join AP Art next school year! These tasks are designed to keep your minds active and foster continued learning during the summer break. They are meant to push your creative thinking and composition skills. Please remember that all summer assignments are due the first week of the new semester. In this section, you will see the list of visual arts assignments you MUST complete over the summer. Each assignment focuses on different skills and techniques that will be further refined in class. You may use your medium of choice but see each assignment for any specifications.
TO COMPLETE THIS SECTION, YOU MUST COMPLETE 3 OUT OF 4 ASSIGNMENTS LISTED BELOW
In this assignment, create a portrait or self-portrait expressing a specific mood or emotion in the medium of your choice. Use value, color, and proportion to enhance the emotional tone of the image. The artwork should be at least 8.5 x 11 in. and no bigger than 11 x 17 in.
In this assignment, set up a still life composed of ONLY reflective objects (glass or metal) and arrange them on a fabric background. Show at least 3 reflective objects on the fabric. Consider texture, placement, and movement. The artwork should be at least 8.5 x 11 in. and no bigger than 11 x 17 in.
In this assignment, use perspective to capture a portion of an interesting street sign, the side of a wall, or the architectural design of a building. Consider composition, colors, and lettering. Typography must be incorporated into the design. The artwork should be at least 8.5 x 11 in. and no bigger than 11 x 17 in.
In this assignment, choose a recognizable work of art and create a master copy in your own distinct style, medium, and theme. Consider the context, composition, and techniques used in the original image. Artwork should be easily recognizable from the original image. The artwork should be at least 8.5 x 11 in. and no bigger than 11 x 17 in.
In this section is the list of written assignments you MUST complete over the summer. Each assignment focuses on different art topics we’ll explore further in class. All papers must be double-spaced, 12 pt. font.

Participate in an online group discussion forum, responding to 2 art discussions. The videos and blog posts will be found here. To receive full credit for this assignment, for EACH art discussion, you MUST do the following:
Respond to the original prompt. I will leave a comment responding to you.
Then, leave a comment on another student’s post OR respond to my comment on your post.
**One paragraph minimum per response**
Write a 2-3 page paper on your experience visiting an art museum of your choice, in or outside of LA, and analyze one image from the museum. Use the museum’s website and artist’s plaque to help in your research. Respond to the following prompt:
Write a visual and contextual analysis of one work. Why did that artwork stand out to you and how is the artist expressing their message/emotion? Use basic elements and principles of art and design in your response.
Write a 2-3 page paper reflecting on the Netflix series: Abstract. Watch 2 episodes of your choice and respond to the following prompt:
What are the artist’s art-making processes? Describe what interests the artist and how, if at all, their style, approach, and thinking, relate to yours. What interested you the most in the episode? And if you could ask the artists each a question, what would it be and why?
In this section is the summer Zoom office hour schedule. We’ll meet as a class to review work in progress, answer any questions, and give feedback on your assignments. The schedule is subject to change, the teacher will notify students as soon as possible.
