My name is Faye Moledina and I'm an 11th grader at Laurel School in Shaker Heights, OH. I joined the Environmental Justice Semester because I knew it was a space to explore my passion. As a high-schooler with a packed schedule, it was hard to find the time to dive into the injustices I knew were happening around me because it isn't built into our typical school curriculum. I knew being a part of the semester I could better understand why and how people are affected by the broken systems we have. Through this semester I was able to reach an understanding of what change needs to be made and take action!
The Environmental Justice Semester (EJS) at Laurel is a semester-long, academic program open to Tenth and Eleventh Grade girls from any public, private, parochial, or charter school in Northeast Ohio. The learner-centered Semester takes place on Laurel’s 150-acre Butler Campus in Russell Township, Ohio, which offers a natural space with terrestrial, aquatic, and agricultural ecosystems for student changemakers to devise solutions for the ecological and social challenges facing urban Cleveland, a rustbelt city grappling with many environmental and social justice issues.
