At The Leigh UTC, we’re dedicated to helping every student thrive, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). We believe every young person deserves the chance to reach their full potential. That’s why we have a strong support team in place, including a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) for each Key Stage, a Speech and Language Therapist, and a group of committed teaching assistants. Together, they work to provide tailored support for students who may need a little extra help beyond what is usually offered to others of the same age.
Students who need this additional support are added to our SEN register, while those with emerging or more moderate needs are placed on our Additional Educational Needs (AEN) register. These students are closely monitored to ensure the right support is put in place if their needs change over time.
Our SENCo also works closely with a wide range of external professionals to make sure our support has the biggest possible impact. Support at The Leigh UTC can include:
In-class help from adults for individuals or small groups
Specialised intervention sessions to build skills such as literacy
Support with exam access arrangements (like a reader or scribe)
Personalised provision where detailed in an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
Opportunities during break and lunchtime to build social skills, complete homework, or get help with organisation
For students with an EHCP, their support is regularly reviewed through an annual review process that includes the school, the student, parents or carers, and any involved external agencies.
Our admissions process is inclusive and applied fairly to all students, regardless of any additional needs or disabilities. Once a student with a disability joins our school, the SENCo works closely with their family, primary school, the Local Authority, and any relevant professionals to make their transition as smooth and supportive as possible.
We are proud to be a school that values equality and inclusion. Our Equal Opportunities Policy guides our commitment to ensuring that students with disabilities are fully involved in school life. From educational trips and work experience placements to theatre visits and residentials, our SEN team is there to support students every step of the way. We also work hard to make sure all students can access and enjoy both curricular and extracurricular activities,
