Cultures from around the world
At Oaks Primary Academy, we are lucky to count so many nationalities among our growing community. Culture and traditions are important to all of us, no matter where we come from. They tell the story of who we are. Sharing and celebrating each others' culture supports an understanding and respect of everyone's similarities and differences. We learn about places near and far.
As a school that delivers the National Curriculum through the International Baccalaureate, International Mindedness is an integral part to our learning and teaching. We were delighted this week when two of our pupils shared their Bulgarian heritage with us. Read about their celebration below.
Happy Baba Marta
On the 1st of March, Bulgarian people celebrate a traditional holiday called Baba Marta (or Grandma Marta in English) This celebration welcomes the approaching spring. On that day, Bulgarians exchange ‘Martenitsi’ (Martenitsa - singular, ‘Martenitsi - plural). These are small adornments made of red and white yarn. People greet each other by saying “Chestita Baba Marta” (Happy Grandma Marta).
In the images below, you can see Year 6 making their Martenitsi. This custom wishes great health, good luck and happiness to other family and friends. When someone gives you a Martenitsa, you should wear it until you see a stork, swallow or a fruit tree which has blossomed. It is believed that the Martenitsa brings good health, happiness and longevity.
We are looking forward to sharing more customs and traditions from our community with you!
World Book Day
World Book Day 2022 has been a resounding success! Thank you to our families for supporting this day, as well as to our staff who always dive into any opportunity to dress up! Celebration assembly this morning was a colourful event and our class costume parades around the hall made a welcome return. Many pupils took part in the Where's Wally hunt around school and there have been plenty of stories and books shared in classrooms.
