Through quality teaching of Physical, Social and Health Education (PSHE) whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will always strive for their personal best.
Children will follow the National Curriculum expectations in PSHE and we support children to develop mastery of concepts and inspire enthusiasm and interest in the subject.
We strive to develop our pupils' understanding of how to live with a healthy lifestyle and make positive decisions. We aim to ensure that our delivery of PSHE leads to all pupils leaving our academy with the skills and mindset to be successful in all aspects of their lives.
We are dedicated to ensuring that our children are well supported and their well-being is a priority; through sessions . We develop healthy minds and bodies. PSHE sessions should be embedded into inquiry lessons where possible and taught stand alone where needed.
All children develop their skills regardless of their starting point. All children are seen as an important member of the school community. Cross-curricular topics (e.g. use of computing, literacy, history, drama etc.) taught can be in the moment to address issues that arise within the class.
Coverage of PSHE should be planned with accordance to the yearly overview and through inquiries that may arise through the year. National Curriculum objectives will be covered sufficiently through each taught module. Outdoor learning opportunities are established throughout the subject.
The subject leader for PSHE will meet the senior leadership team and representatives from the Trust on a regular basis to evaluate provision in order to ensure that teaching and learning in PSHE is highly effective. Where necessary, staff will receive coaching and training in PSHE/RSE.
Lessons will be exciting to ensure that all children are engaged in topics relating to PSHE. PSHE is delivered within inquiry sessions where possible or stand alone sessions. Lessons are planned through the National Curriculum, considering the importance of both the breadth and depth of learning.
The subject leader for PSHE has mapped out the curriculum, to ensure that there is a coherent sequence, which progressively builds skills and knowledge. Well-Being and Anti-bullying week activities provide a whole school focus on PSHE topics.
The implementation and embedding of the PYP Learner Profiles within all subjects in the school development supports the children's understanding of PSHE topics. Extra safety protocols were put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic. Children are able to express their feelings and these feelings are recognised and addressed by members of staff on an individualised basis.
Our academy environment reinforces the PSHE curriculum through displays around the school, special school projects, as well as in lessons. Through life skills sessions, links to the local community, visitors and local and International events, we provide enrichment opportunities to contextualise learning.
Whole school assemblies allow for the development in children’s understanding of relationships, moral obligations and resilience.
Through quality teaching of the subject and through the school ethos , children will leave Horsmonden Primary Academy with a number of skills. Students will leave school with skills to deal with different situations, applying these, enabling them to navigate themselves through modern day life and have high aspirations to achieve.
Students will be able to understand and appreciate difference and diversity in the world around them, allowing them to be a positive member of an ever diverse world. Students will be able to both recognise and manage their emotions, equipt with strategies for self regulation if needed. Students will have good self esteem, be proud of their achievements and be confident to try new experiences open to them.
Through a developed whole school approach, children will leave Horsmonden with a good understanding of British values, Tolerance, mutual respect and rule of law, allowing learners to be positive life-long citizens. This understanding, as well of a solid foundation of RSE, will also allow them to identify and create positive relationships, both now and in the future.
