Unit 3: Numbers and Operations in Base Ten - Multiplication
IIn this unit, students will learn how to perform multiplication using the standard algorithm. Students will build on their understanding of how to compute products of one-digit numbers and multiples of 10,100, and 1,000. Students will display an understanding of the role played by the distributive property in the multiplication process. They will also connect diagrams of areas or arrays to numerical work to develop understanding of general base ten multiplication methods.
The unit begins with multiplication of single-digit numbers and progresses to multiplication of multi-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. Methods include expanded form, base ten materials, and the standard algorithm for multiplication.
Week of Sept. 21st - 25th
Monday - NBT 16
Tuesday - NBT 15/17
Wednesday - NBT 18
Thursday - NONE! Lessons 13-18 Quiz Today!
MP.3: In NBT5-23 Extension 3, students construct a viable argument when they explain how to use an area model to show why a shortcut for finding certain products works. Students analyze and critique the reasoning of a partner.
MP.7: In NBT5-24 Extension 2, students use structure in the standard algorithm for multiplication when they find missing digits in multiplications.
MP.8: In NBT5-19 Extension 3, students look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning when they try various examples of whole numbers multiplied by 10,000 and notice that the number of zeros in the product depends on the number of zeros in both factors.
