If you end up liking the language you can take up to 4 years, including Honors or AP.

The longer you take a language, the deeper your understanding.
More time to learn the history and culture.
Add another language later in high school to broaden your understanding.
Starting a language in 9th grade is good for your college and university applications!
UNM expects 2 years of the same language.
Many out-of-state colleges and universities expect 3 years; some want 4!

But I'm not sure I can fit a language into my schedule in 9th grade.
It can be hard to find room for every course you want to take. Don't forget that you have 4 years to take all of the electives that interest you. You may even want to save some of those electives for 11th and 12th grade, when your academic load will likely be heavier.
Also, if you are already thinking about doing PE/Athletics or ROTC for two consecutive years, don't forget that those can replace the 9th grade Foundations of Physical Education course and fulfill your PE graduation requirement. Starting in the 2023-24 school year, 9th graders who plan on taking four years of Marching Band can also earn their PE credit that way!
