The State Seal of Bilingualism-Biliteracy (informally, the Bilingual Seal) recognizes seniors who have demonstrated proficiency in one or more languages other than English (LOTE). Students receive a seal on their diploma and notation on their transcript for successful completion of the requirements for the Bilingual Seal.
In order to earn the Bilingual Seal, students must complete 2 of the following 3 items:
4 Units of Credit in the same LOTE
1A and 1B taken at the middle-school level count as 1 credit.
Passing score on a national assessment
For all languages, this can be met with a 3 on the Advanced Placement exam.
For French, German, and Spanish, the CLEP can also count.
For Latin, the ALIRA (ACTFL Latin Interpretive Reading Assessment) may also count with an Intermediate or higher score.
Completion of a portfolio and presentation to a panel of native speakers
This will be scheduled for March/April of the senior year.
Students present to a panel of native speakers (for Latin, people with a high level of education in the language) and answer questions.
The portfolio and presentation are split between English and the LOTE.
Additional questions should be addressed to the upper-level language teachers.
