Dear All,
We are proud to continue to share with you our fourth reading newsletter of the year. The love of reading here at Lark Rise is going from strength to strength and it is fantastic to hear all the lovely book talk that is happening across the whole school. Adults and children alike, are sharing their thoughts on high quality texts and I have had some lovely recommendations of books from children which will be added to my, 'To Read,' list.
The Scholastic book fair arrived in school last half term and we would like to thank you all for your amazing support with this. Thanks to your book purchases and generosity, the school raised a total of £1040.12 which we will use to purchase a wide range of quality texts for our libraries. Again, thank you so much for supporting this event and supporting your children's love of reading. Well done to our reading ambassadors also who supported this event in their own time and were amazing role models for Lark Rise.
Since our last newsletter, there have been many exciting things happening in school around the topic of reading. On 2nd March, we held our World Book Day celebrations. It was so lovely to see the children come into school in their nightwear. Pyjamas ranged from the traditional patterned ones, cartoon themed ones and some lovely big fluffy animal onesies! Everyone looked amazing (adults too!) and the relaxed attire did not dampen children's enthusiasm or love of learning. Throughout the day every child in school focused on the same text, 'The Journey,' by Aaron Becker. This lovely picture book was shared in assembly and the children learnt that although this book has no words, it tells a powerful story. They then returned to class to use their reading skills in order to produce a piece of writing based around the text. I am so proud of what the children produced and how much they enjoyed this beautiful text. Adults in school also chose their favourite book to share with the children in our end of day assembly. The children were shown the front covers of each text and then went to listen to the whole book or an extract with their chosen adult. It was so lovely to see how all children across the school embraced this opportunity to explore different texts with some less familiar adults - well done all!
Our Lark Rise Reading Community Initiative is now up and running. We have received some lovely reviews and comments about texts you are sharing with your children at home. A google form has been shared with you so we would love to continue this fabulous 'book talk,' going amongst our children both in school and at home. Don't forget, if your review is chosen, it will appear on the reading newsletter and your child will receive a book from our Reading Robot. You may receive some inspiring feedback from other children and adults which may spark an interest in a book you may never have thought about before. Please look further down this page to see our published reviews.
Just a reminder to draw your attention to our, 'Talking Book Page,' which is accessible under the Book Recommendations tab at the top of the page. The children are continuously working to improve their reading fluency by listening to others read aloud as well as reading aloud themselves. We have featured another text this term on our page which has been read by our fantastic LKS2 reading ambassadors. Please listen to this text with your children. I am positive they will love the story! Please encourage your children to let me know what they thought in school about the talking book page and any book recommendations will be greatly received.
Finally, just a reminder that reading aloud each day with your children will support their fluency and oracy skills. Don't forget to record what and when you have read on Boom Reader. I have attached the link below;
As always, I have attached a link for a great list of recommended texts for children below. Please explore with your children and we would love to feature and share your experiences of a chosen text on the next edition of the newsletter.

We have been reading a chapter of this book each night and Millie always looks forward to this special time! This story is told from a child’s perspective which makes it easy for Millie to relate to. It has promoted discussions about refugees and their experiences through its telling of Ahmet’s story. Key themes within this book are kindness, friendship and empathy. We are excited to continue reading!
We have really enjoyed reading about the six little bunnies and their adventures in bright burrow in this series of four books. The latest book we have read has been about Ruby and her missing ice skates. Charlotte has enjoyed reading about the bunnies’ homes, family, school and their friendship with each other. She especially likes the jokes that one of the bunnies, Sky, tells throughout the books!
It’s a science book that tells how can we eat insects in a funny way.
