As part of our HerStory initiative, we’ve made strong progress on our in-progress documentary focused on sexual harassment awareness. To inform the project, we launched a school-wide anonymous safety survey that received 274 responses, helping us understand how students feel about safety, boundaries, and consent on campus. We also gathered 4–5 anonymous stories from students who shared personal experiences with harassment or sexual assault, which will be included in the film to highlight real voices from our school. So far, we’ve interviewed 4–5 girls on camera and plan to include more to capture a variety of perspectives and experiences.
In addition to HerStory, our club has worked on other projects to support and uplift girls in our school community. We produced three zines - these are small magazines filled with articles about topics that impact girls at school and the global level. These zines also include comics and original artwork that match the themes of each issue, and they represent a collective effort by all the girls in our club. At the start of the school year, we also hosted a Girls Build Retreat, where we organized games and bonding activities after school to help girls get to know each other and build a stronger support system.
Looking back on our work this year, we’re proud of how much we’ve grown as a team and how much we’ve been able to accomplish. Working on the HerStory documentary has shown us how important it is to shed light on sexual harassment, especially the kinds that often get ignored or brushed off. Hearing real stories from students and seeing how many people responded to our survey proved that this is something that needs more attention in our school. It hasn’t always been easy to talk about these topics, but it has pushed us to be more thoughtful and confident in speaking up.
Beyond the documentary, the zines and the Girls Build Retreat helped us build a stronger community. It was rewarding to make something creative and meaningful together, especially when it involved topics that matter to us as girls. Planning the retreat also showed us how important it is to build friendships and trust before diving into the more serious work.
