Impact Report 2023 - 2024
'23 -'24 IMPACT REPORT
What problem did your team solve/address?
How is this need aligned with your impact area?
What research did you do to find out what has come before or already exists?
Our current project focuses on building a bridge for the community and our students at Westbrook High. Our students noticed that parents are not aware of the various clubs that are on campus and would like to show them what it means to be involved in extracurriculars. This aligned with our impact area of health and wellness & advocacy because our GBLA team is hosting various events that help students and parents learn ways to take care of their mental health and advocate for events that help foster and strengthen the relationships of students and their parents. The events hosted provided bonding opportunities for parents and GBLA members.
What are your team’s top achievements from the GirlsBuild project?
Our team's top achievements from this year have been to involve parents and strengthen the bonds within our GBLA and school community. Our most successful events have been the Loteria Days hosted in partnership with the Promise Parent team.
Students say...
Lesley Huinil, 11th Grade Lead: "My team's goal for this year's project was to engage parents and our community to create a more positive environment not only for the girls in our school but also for our community. Additionally, one event that contributed to our goal was the day of service we participated in along with other GBLA groups. We have also had the opportunity to work with our parent college team to help our community with food pantries. Another event my team has done was our movie night, in which we opened the doors to our family and friends to bond through a movie night. Lastly, we have an upcoming thrift sale that will be open to our family and community. These events will and were successful because not only did it help our GBLA team come closer but it helped families and our school community become more united which was our goal."
Nyziah McLaurin, Fundraising Team: "Our top achievements this year were our 2 Loteria events and we arranged a movie night for families. Another achievement is our upcoming event with the thrift workshops when we will be collecting clean and in good condition clothing."
Jaelyn Garcia, General Member: "My team's top achievement from this year was being able to have the parents be more active in this year's project goal by doing the movie night."
Mia Whalen, General Member: "Our GBLA team's top achievements have been the Day of Service, which was very fun for everyone who participated, and our goal for the year was to get more parent involvement. I think we succeeded with that since we've had multiple events with parents playing Loteria and winning prizes. When attending the parent-involved events, parents are laughing, smiling, and having fun."
Kimberly Antonio, Leadership Support: "I believe that our team's top achievements from this year's project goals were restoring relationships with our Girl Build LA members as we continue to grow our team."
Cesar Cruz, General Member: "Our team's top achievement from this year's project was to get parents more involved in the program and raise awareness of what their child does in this program. With this, our parents are more aware of the program and how it can benefit the community as a whole."
REFLECTION...
"For the upcoming year, we have big plans to expand the program to help others out of our school community.
We are grateful for everyone's commitment and energy to making sure that our events have been successful. We learned the importance of using their voices and advocacy to bring change in different events. We have met their mission to involve more parents and have them be part of the school community.
One thing we would like to improve on is improving our fundraising skills and working to be even more active on our Social Media accounts. There are so many things we can do to help our school community and everyone around us! "
