Organised within the framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, the intent of the Music curriculum within Langley Park Primary Academy is to equip pupils with the necessary skills, knowledge and attributes to be lifelong learners and conscientious global citizens. This allows our children to develop as individuals under our Learner Profile Attributes.
At Langley Park the music curriculum intends to inspire creativity and self-expression as we encourage our children on their musical journeys as well as giving them opportunities to connect with others. We hope to foster a lifelong love of music by exposing them to diverse musical experiences and igniting a passion for music. Through the PYP, children will have agency and ownership by listening and responding to different musical styles as well as finding their voices as singers, performers and as composers. These opportunities will enable them to become confident and reflective musicians.
The teaching of skills and knowledge is thoroughly planned to ensure there is a clear sequence in learning and skills across the subject. Although classes do not have a “subject” timetable, there are clear expectations for planning and delivery of music in each year group. Teachers plan to meet the needs of their pupils whilst still meeting the expectations of the National Curriculum. At Langley Park the music curriculum ensures students sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is embedded in classroom activities as well as weekly singing assemblies, various concerts and performances, the learning of instruments, and the joining of musical ensembles if pupils wish to. In Key Stage 2 a visiting music specialist will teach an instrument to the pupils including recorders and ukuleles as we feel it is important for all pupils to experience learning an instrument at this stage of their lives.
The students will master a range of skills through the Music curriculum and these will progress through the year groups to build on prior knowledge. Students will be encouraged to sing and use their voices individually and in a group. Students will create and compose music of their own, use technology when composing and listen to and review the music of great composers. As well as this the children will be exposed to a wide range of musical genres and develop an appreciation of different musical styles such as jazz, pop, classical and rock. Children will develop an awareness of musical language and be able to apply this into their own work.
Whilst at Langley Park, children have the opportunity to forge their own musical journey, which allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon. This in turn fosters emotional regulation through music, the ability to communicate through sound rather than words, interaction with and awareness of others, and self-reflection.
Creativity is at the heart of the music curriculum but children will also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to students individually and globally. Children are able to enjoy music, in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer. They can discuss music and comprehend its parts. They can sing, feel a pulse, add rhythms and create melodies in a group and they can further develop these skills in the future and continue to enjoy and embrace music in their lives.
