The UK computing curriculum was introduced in 2014 with the aim of ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to become digitally literate and have the knowledge and skills to thrive in an increasingly digital world. The purpose of the curriculum is to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to understand and use technology effectively. The curriculum further aims to develop their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
The key ideas of the computing curriculum include three main strands: computer science, digital literacy, and information technology.
Computer science focuses on the principles of computing and the development of programming skills, while digital literacy focuses on the safe and responsible use of technology, including online safety, cybersecurity, and data protection. Information technology focuses on the use of technology to create, store, and share information.
We are part of the Leigh Academy Trust and have a trust-wide digital strategy.
At Leigh Academy Langley Park, our intent is to provide a computing curriculum that is broad, balanced, and engaging, and which enables our pupils to develop the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Our curriculum through the Primary Year Programme (PYP) of inquiry is designed to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to become digitally literate and have the knowledge and skills to use technology effectively and creatively.
Our computing curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils develop a deep understanding of the key concepts and principles of computing, including programming, algorithms, data representation, and computer systems. We also place a strong emphasis on digital literacy, ensuring that pupils develop the skills they need to use technology safely and responsibly and to protect themselves and others online. Finally, we focus on information technology, giving pupils the skills they need to create, store, and share digital content.
At Leigh Academy Langley Park, we implement our computing curriculum through a range of engaging, practical activities, which are designed to develop pupils' knowledge and skills in all three areas of the curriculum. Every pupil at KS1 has access to an iPad and every student in KS2 has access to a Chromebook. All teachers and support staff working with pupils are trained to at least level 1 as google educators or google workplace skills level 3 and plans are in place to train all teachers to level 2. Our academy is in the process of certification of a Google-certified trainer. We use a range of software and hardware, including coding software, interactive whiteboards, and robotics, to ensure that pupils have the opportunity to develop their programming and problem-solving skills.
We place a strong emphasis on the safe and responsible use of technology, and teach pupils about online safety, cybersecurity, and data protection. All software used in the academy goes through our trusts rigorous software checks called privacy perfect. We provide a range of opportunities for pupils to develop their digital literacy skills, including workshops, group discussions, and role-playing activities.
At Leigh Academy Langley Park, we believe that our computing curriculum has a significant impact on pupils' learning and development. Pupils develop a deep understanding of key computing concepts and principles, and are able to apply this knowledge to real-world problems. They also develop their digital literacy skills, which helps to keep them safe online and prepares them for future challenges.
Our curriculum also helps to develop pupils' creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills and provides them with a solid foundation for further study and future employment. Pupils leave our school with a passion for technology and a strong understanding of how to use it effectively and responsibly.
