What makes Leigh Academy Langley Park unique?
At Leigh Academy Langley Park, we are thrilled to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) to our students. This program provides a framework for learning that is engaging, relevant, challenging, and significant. We believe that the PYP prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. We provide a safe and stimulating learning environment, where children feel happy, secure and valued.
What Is the PYP? 💡
The PYP is an international curriculum framework designed for students aged 3-12 years. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is defined by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, as well as transdisciplinary skills, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning.
How It Fits with the National Curriculum 🧩
The PYP is not a separate curriculum, but a framework for delivering the National Curriculum in an engaging and meaningful way. It provides a structure for inquiry-based learning that allows students to make connections between different subject areas and to the world around them. The national curriculum subjects are explored through units of inquiry, designed around the transdisciplinary themes.
Connecting with the National Curriculum
The PYP complements the National Curriculum by integrating:
Discrete skills lessons
Inquiry-led learning that connects subjects through real-world themes
Curriculum coverage tracking to ensure all National Curriculum objectives are met
How Learning Is Organised ⬢
Learning in the PYP is organized around six transdisciplinary themes:
Who we are
Where we are in place and time
How we express ourselves
How the world works
How we organize ourselves
Sharing the planet
These themes are explored through units of inquiry, which are designed to be engaging, relevant, challenging, and significant. Each unit integrates knowledge and skills from different subject areas, allowing students to make connections between their learning and the real world.
The Five Essential Elements
Knowledge – What students know
Concepts – What they understand (e.g., Change, Connection, Perspective)
Skills (ATL) – Thinking, Communication, Social, Research, Self-Management
Attitudes – Values like Empathy, Integrity, Respect
Action – Applying learning to make a difference
The Learner Profile
The IB Learner Profile shapes who our students become:
Inquirers/Thinkers/Communicators/Principled/Caring/Open-minded/Risk-takers/Balanced /Reflective/Knowledgeable.
These attributes are developed across curriculum, school life, and home.
International Mindedness 🤝
International mindedness is a key element of the PYP. It is about developing an understanding of the world around us and an appreciation of different cultures and perspectives. Through the PYP, students are encouraged to become active and engaged global citizens who are able to make a positive contribution to the world. We are committed to supporting our students develop international mindedness by:
Providing opportunities to learn about different cultures and perspectives
Encouraging students to reflect on their own cultural values and beliefs
Promoting respect and understanding between people from different backgrounds
Our IB Journey 🤝
Leigh Academy Langley Park is a proud IB World School, preparing for our official re-evaluation in January 2026.
We’ve joined with Leigh Academy Bearsted, Oaks, Treetops, and Molehill to form a multi-campus model, strengthening collaboration and enriching our PYP programme.
