Although winter can be a cold and dreary season, it is still important to get outside and mingle with nature! There are many benefits to being outside in winter, including:
Boosting your mood and fighting SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)
Reduces stress and improves focus
Increases relaxation
Strengthens immunity
Increases Vitamin D
There are plenty of walking and cycling routes in and around Maidstone and its neighbouring villages, plus there are many country parks a little further afield.
This year, the Big Garden Birdwatch is taking place between Friday 23rd January and Sunday 25th January 2026. It is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey! Every year, hundreds of thousands of nature lovers like you take part, helping to build a picture of how garden birds are faring.
All you have to do is:
Choose 1 hour between 23rd and 25th January
Only record the birds that land in your patch
Record the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time
You can find out more information and record your results at www.rspb.org.uk
Happy counting!
