Restoring Soil With Microbes

The agricultural and arboricultural industries have relied on chemical fertilizers for enhancing plant growth for decades. Despite their many benefits, there can be severe costs to the environment including eutrophication of water bodies and collapse of the soil food web. Let's dive into the underground, microscopic world of the soil food web to better understand how soil biology affects soil - and plant - health. I will examine various soil bioamendments, from single-species "bugs in a jug" to dynamic microbial consortiums (eg. compost tea/extract). We will look at how to make it, quality-control it, apply it, test it, and maintain it. With a shift to a regenerative soil practice with a focus on enhancing soil biology, it is possible to reduce or eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Grey to Green: The Urban Battleground

The ability to find places to plant trees and have them survive is becoming increasingly difficult in today’s intensified urban centres. This presentation will investigate the factors at play that affect tree establishment in hardscape environments, ranging from project planning, construction, and long-term operations and maintenance of green infrastructure.

By gaining a better understanding of these factors and the challenges they present to the long-term viability of tree establishment in hardscape environments, the urban forest professional will be able to engage and collaborate with allied professionals to develop creative solutions that not only provide a means by which to ensure trees can be successfully established but also integrate grey and green infrastructure into a cohesive system.

Spruce Up Your Diagnostic Skills!

Spruce trees are one of the most popular species that populate our urban landscapes. They moderate urban climates, filter airborne particles, provide wildlife habitat and year-round canopies that warm our hearts in the depths of winter. The extreme climatic conditions of urban settings can wreak havoc on our beloved spruces, often leading to misguided diagnoses and the potential for ineffective treatment solutions. The objective of this presentation is to help you learn to recognize approximately 12 pest, physiological and cultural issues associated with spruce trees. Live samples and key diagnostic points will help to improve your confidence and ability to properly diagnose spruce tree issues for your clients. A self-test of your knowledge before and after will help confirm and integrate the learning objectives.
