Visual Supports
To help with specific task completion, the adult will place two pictures on a First-Then Board. These pictures may be a sequence (ie: first go potty, then wash hands) or separate tasks (IE; first writing, then play trains) or a task and reward (ie: first math, then cookie). The pictures should be give along with the words and/or signs. You can use this for any child. This strategy can also be used with a verbal prompt, (ie: first clean your room, then you can play) or (ie: eat your carrots, then dessert). This can also be used to teach new skills, manage challenging behavior, or support a simple schedule. This helps the child know what your expectations are. Keep in mind it is only effective if the adult follows through as well.
Keeping a routine is important:
Set a schedule for rising, meals and bedtime. Resilience thrives with proper nutrition, and rest. Get dress as through you're going to school or work. Build in time for school work, and exercise. Fill your day with projects and end it with rituals such as reading, catching up with friends over videos, making a phone call, sending out love to family that you're unable to spend time with.
