Oak Grove Primary School Counseling Department

Welcome to the OGPS Counseling Department

We are the pre-kindergarten through first grade counselors at Oak Grove Primary! We have the privilege of working with students through classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling. Additionally, we collaborate with school staff, administration, and parents in order to best meet the needs of students. Some of the specific things we do include....

Classroom Guidance Lessons

We visit each classroom monthly beginning in September and teach thirty minute lessons to our students throughout the school year. These lessons give us an opportunity to interact with every student and get to know them by name. Our September lesson topic is "What is a Counselor?" During this lesson we help our students understand what a counselor is and how a counselor can be of help to a student. Other lesson topics include following directions, understanding feelings of self and others, problem solving skills, friendship skills, and study skills.

Small Group Counseling

We offer a variety of small group counseling to students who may benefit from spending some extra time developing social or emotional skills along with their peers. We use data from our universal behavior screener as well as teacher and parent referrals to identify students who would benefit from learning and practicing skills in a small group counseling environment. Previous groups we have implemented have included Lunch Bunch- social skills, Cool Club- anger management, Calm Crew- anxiety, and Banana Spilts- divorce. Parent permission is required to join a small group.

Individual Counseling

Some students can benefit from one-on-one counseling regarding social or emotional challenges. Although we do not offer therapeutic counseling, we do offer short term counseling. If you would like to set up an individual counseling for your student, please contact us via email fran.camille@lamarcountyschools.org (kindergarten), jennifer.cutrer@lamarcountyschools.org (first grade), or call us at 601-264-9764.
