Policies and Expectations

Homework and Grades

This year we will be using Reach for Reading, a curriculum using many National Geographic materials, for our Language Arts instruction.

The homework format will stay the same each week all year. Students are expected to be reading books or magazines every day. Each week students will write me a letter about what they are reading in their Reading Notebooks. Sufficient training will be given on these letters to ensure students understand my expectations for quality work. Other class assignments will be due on their assigned due date which will be sent in the grade newsletter. Your child may or may not have time to complete some or all of it in class. This will depend on our time constraints and their ability to use time wisely.

Student’s grades should be mainly an indicator of content mastery. As such, 50% of student’s grades will be class assignments and 50% will be assessments. Tests, quizzes, and longer writing assignments will fall under assessments. Much of student work will be assigned and turned in through Google Classroom or paper. Papers without a name may be thrown away without warning. I am always available to contact through my email and will respond within 24 hours on weekdays. I’m looking forward to watching these amazing students improve over the year.

Toys

I do not allow toys to be a distraction to students in my classroom. My definition of a toy is any physical object that takes attention away from academic learning. This can include anything from a Pokémon card to a cell phone. If I see a toy being used in class as a distraction to the owner or other students, I will take it away and keep it in my 'Toy Box'. They will not get a warning if I see the toy after I explain my policy to the students at the beginning of the year. Students may get their toy back by having a parent or guardian come in to get it from me. You then may deal with the situation as you see fit. If the toy is never picked up, the student will get it back right before Christmas break or at the end of the year. In the case of more expensive objects, like phones, I will notify you that I have it. However, with most other toys, it is your students' responsibility if they choose to tell you.

"Fidgets": Some students do benefit from tools called "fidgets". These tools can easily become toys. Rules for fidgets include use in one hand under the table, it may not make noise, and may not cause distraction for students around them.

Thank you for your support of focused learning.
