Senegal, officially the Republic of Senegal, is a country in West Africa. Senegal's land covers an area of ~197,000 sq kilometers (76,000 sq miles) and has a population of ~17 million. Senegal is located in the region of West Africa, and is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Senegal's terrain consists of mainly rolling sandy plains.
Senegal's climate can be divided into two seasons- the dry season from October to May and the wet season from June to September. While the dry areas in Senegal receive less than 300 mm (~12 inches) of rainfall per year, the wetter areas receive around 1200 mm (~47 inches)/yr.
Senegal is a republic with a presidency; the president is elected every 5 years. The country has more than 80 political parties, and they have a National Assembly, which has 150 seats.
Senegal's economy is mainly driven by mining, construction, tourism, fishing and agriculture. These industries are the main sources of employment in rural areas. Senegal also has abundant natural resources, like iron, zircon, gas, gold, phosphates, and numerous recent oil discoveries. Senegal has one of the most developed tourist industries in Africa as well. Additionally, France continues to provide critical aid and support to ensure the continuation of Senegal's successful economy.
Senegal is well known in traditional storytelling. Storytelling is typically done by griots, who keep West African history alive through music and words. The griot occupation is passed down through the generations. Senegal also has a rich musical heritage. Some of the most popular instruments include the Sabar (a drum) and the Kora (a string instrument). The Senegalese enjoy playing multiple sports, and one the most popular ones is wrestling. Wrestling has taken their country by storm, and it is extremely beneficial to many to escape poverty. Senegal is hosting the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics, making it the first African country to host an Olympic event!
As Senegal borders the Atlantic Ocean, fish is a major part of their diet. Chicken, lamb, beef, and eggs are also used in their cuisine; however, pork is not, due to their country's majority Muslim population. The primary crop of Senegal, peanuts, is also widely used; as well as couscous, white rice, sweet potatoes, black-eyed peas, and more. Desserts are super sweet, with native ingredients and a style heavily influenced by the French.
