Welcome Back Flyers!

Back to school time can leave most with mixed emotions. Summer has officially come to an end and it's time to get back into a school routine. This can be exciting and fun but can also be met with tears, fear and worries. Below are some resources with some tips and information about transitioning back to school for both families and kids!

Activities

Back-to-School Bracelets: There are several sites where you can buy bracelets for this purpose (search "back to school bracelets") but you can easily make a trip to a craft store and make your own! The poem goes like this:

On your first day of school...

Here are two bracelets, one big and one small.

I'll wear the big one and I'll think of you.

The small one is yours so you'll think of me too.

Wear it to school while you work and play, to have my heart with you while you're away.

Worry Stones: You can make your own worry stone using the ingredients listed below or you can find a stone and paint it!

Salt Dough

  • 1 cup Flour

  • 1/2 cup Salt

  • 1/2 cup Warm water

  • Gel food coloring

  • Sparkly glitter

Mix flour and salt together. Add in warm water and and stir to create a dough. Add water if the dough is too dry. Add more flour and salt if it becomes too wet. Tint the dough with food color and add some glitter. Form the dough into small "stones" and let dry overnight.

How to Use Worry Stones

Gently rub the sides of the stones with their thumbs and forefinger to calm themselves down. She encourages kids to put them in their pockets to use when they are going to face a situation that may make them worry–like starting a new school year.

It is also suggested that kids name their worries and talking about them with their grown ups. You guessing about your kids’ behaviors is never as effective as them telling you what they need. Helping them make new friends when they are worried about having to walk down the hall to use the bathroom doesn’t work.
