To be successful at your internship, you must be on time and professional at all times. Be flexible in the hours you can intern and be friendly with coworkers and clients.
Almost everyone gets their job through people they may know. While at your internship or in school, you should broaden your horizons and communicate as much as you can with peers and mentors. These people will be the key to getting a new job or new lead. There is more than one way to network and you need to learn multiple ways to increase your chances of success.
In today's world, everyone is always looking at you at all times and creating their perception about you. You must let the people know who you are, what you are good at and where you want to go. As high school seniors, you will be marketing yourself this year at your internships and more importantly while you're applying to colleges. Applications and resumes are the formal way to market yourself but you can do so much more during the school year to make you even more successful.
Jamie Calabrese - Dr. Pavlak Advanced Chiropractic and PT
Just seeing how they all operate together is so interesting. There was this one patient where he had some sort of neck trouble. At first he was on the PT side of the room, getting stim done there. But then the PT, Dr. Baisley suggests that Dr. Pavlak (Chiropractor) should work on him. Before he could assess him he pulled up his files and looked at the patient's X-Rays. It amazed me how he could look at these X-Rays and know what was wrong and what needed to be done to help. Seeing how these professionals just know what to do makes me excited for me to be at that level.
Tyler Campbell - Jack Daniels Motors
I've learned that being the finance manager at a car dealership is a lot different than I expected. The car selling process also surprised me. I always thought that once the salesman made the deal it was pretty much final, however that is not the case. Rather than the salesman just handing the signed paperwork to the finance manager and it being a done deal, there are still a lot of things that the finance manager needs to do. He needs to get all of the buyer/co-buyer's information, and type it into a system. This is a very long process, as there is a lot of information needed. That is another thing that I did not realize about a sale, the length of it. Obviously I figured that negotiating the sale with the customer took a while, but I thought that was the longest part.
Jeanna Carrazzone - The King Centre
I absolutely love getting to teach my very own dance classes. I teach ballet, tap and jazz to children from ages 5-9. They are the cutest kids and I can’t wait to help them improve throughout the year. I also substitute classes for other teachers. This is also a lot of fun getting the opportunity to teach different types of classes and different ages of kids. I am so grateful for Miss Nancy and all she is teaching me about working, and managing a dance studio. She is so helpful and understanding to my learning process. I didn’t realize how much goes on in the back office of all this, and how stressful it is for everyone working.
Emily Grubbs - LJS Waterproofing
I am running social media platforms, including Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, LinkedIn, BlueBook, Pinterest, and Youtube. I am already very familiar with most of these social media platforms, so it is not much different to run them for a business. I ran my own meeting to talk to the other employees about the importance of social media and marketing. It was an amazing experience to be able to run my own meeting and talk to the company about why my job is important basically. At the meeting I requested that the employees that go on jobsites send me pictures and videos so I can post more on social media. Learning how to run a meeting will be very beneficial for me and my careers after highschool and college.
Kasey Killian - Hackensack Dr. Degliuomini
My mentor showed me Hackensack’s lab system and patient lab results. She would explain the numbers and how it related to a specific kind of blood disease or anemia. A lot of the words she used were new to me, but she explained the terms for the most part. Since I was interning with her during her clinicals, I was able to come in contact with patients and their families. I observed as the doctor asked questions, did a minor check up, and talked to the patient. I found that all of the appointments I observed consisted of mainly talking. This made me think that I want a job in which I am physically carrying out tasks. I don’t want just the patient interaction of prescribing medications and answering questions. Instead, I feel that a more hands on medical job would be a better fit for me. However, I do feel that this internship has been beneficial to me.
Erin Montague - JAG Physical Therapy
A helpful thing about the internship so far is that I was able to talk to one of the PT’s about what to do in college, and it was actually very helpful. Originally I thought I had to go to vet school for what I wanted to do, but he told me that it’s actually the PT route that I need to go to college, and then take specific courses later in the future. I was very grateful that I had that conversation with him because otherwise I would have applied to college for the wrong thing, which would have made it complicated in the future.
Anthony Nyhuis - Akadema Pro
I have learned a lot about the business side of Akadema Pro and its patents and trademarks on products including gloves, bats, batting gloves, and other game apparel. My responsibilities have been to reach out to high-profile Little League players, high school baseball players, college baseball players, MLB players, and baseball accounts. I do this using messaging and invitations through Instagram. For signing up and being a part of the sponsorship program, the players or businesses are offered an incentive. If they sign, the individual player will receive a discount code of 60% off to customize a glove, as well as other free accessories. We try to collaborate with other glove selling businesses so they can share the Akadema discount code with their customers and earn commission. The goal is to expand the Akadema company and brand and make it more popular. I was told to reach out to fifty different Instagram accounts weekly. Currently, I received a response from ten of those accounts. It’s not as easy as it sounds to find new Instagram accounts to message and then you have to wait for them to respond.
Veronica Sterzel - Gingerbread Kids Academy
I have found that keeping a clean classroom and playground area not only helps me keep track of and watch my kids, but also allows me to keep a clear headspace while at work, even though I have multiple children and tasks to take care of. It can definitely be overwhelming at times, but because of my experience, it has become increasingly easy to work through any issue that appears while I am working. My favorite part of my internship is the children. Each and every one of my children has affected my life in their own way. They teach me how to get excited over the little things, such as seeing an airplane fly over us, how to be imaginative, and most importantly, how to be curious and ask questions.
Gabriella Sudol - Hackensack Medical Center
I was able to go in and went straight into the operating room. That was an amazing experience because I was able to see what everyone was doing and it was a very cool surgery to see as well since it was done robotically. I got there before they started the surgery and I was able to see how the Anesthesiologist does everything. I went with him to the patient's room and observed how he asked questions and he later told me why he asked those questions and how the patient's answers helped him determine what is best to do for the surgery. I went with him as he set up the OR room, he showed me all of the equipment in the room and what drugs he was using as well as telling me why. He showed me the tools he uses, and what he does to make sure that all the machines are working properly. He then did a nasotracheal intubation and kept me informed on the challenges he was facing with the patient and what he did to get around it and still be able to provide the proper care to the patient. He always made sure that I was able to see everything that was happening, as well as explaining it to me to ensure that I was getting a proper learning experience.
John Tomasello - Wanaque School
What I’ve learned from this internship so far are just important life skills. It has taught me more responsibility than I already knew or had. With the extra responsibility of having to be somewhere at a certain time instead of just staying in school or work, it helped me with my time management. This internship also gave me insight on how hard the teacher has to work. It also showed me how demanding that the position is. You need to treat every kid the same, but as well differently. Learning every child’s personality is the key, some are more chatty and get distracted easier, which calls for more attention. While some others are more hard working and want to pursue their work, which calls for giving them less attention. Interning at Wanaque School has brought such insight on the position for the future.
