What is STAR?
Our goal for PBIS is to provide a safe, positive, effective school environment for our students. STAR is the framework of the positive behavior program at Rimes Early Learning Center. Students learn how to show ‘STAR’ behavior in all areas of our school. Our school staff will recognize STAR behavior in our building with positive reinforcement to individual students, as well as celebrating grade levels/classes that are showing STAR behavior at school. The STAR acronym stands for:
Safe Choices
Take Responsibility
Act Respectfully
Ready to Learn
Students being kind, smart, and courageous as they played and worked with their friends!
The PBIS Expectation matrix is a chart that clearly communicates our school's expectations for positive behaviors for students throughout our school building. The purpose of a PBIS Expectation Matrix is to identify and display positive behaviors across all school contexts and settings.
At Rimes Early Learning Center, we have identified the behavior expectations we want to develop among our students and how those values might look in a variety of settings. These settings include the classroom, playground, cafeteria, and hallways. Posters are placed in each setting as visual reminders for students to follow the STAR behavior expectations. For example, these posters include the expectations, such as Act Respectfully, which means that a student raises his hand in the classroom, follows rules on the playground, and uses a quiet voice in the cafeteria.
For PBIS to produce positive change in a school’s climate, it needs to be employed school wide and with consistency. These positive interactions transfer into stronger relationships between the student and teacher and thus a better learning environment for all students.
At Rimes Early Learning Center we have four school expectations which are reinforced daily. Each morning we work together to say our STAR pledge.
I pledge to be a STAR in all I do, from when I wake up until my day is through.
I accept everyone, even though they are different from me. Showing respect to others is key.
Being a STAR is a great way, as I pledge to do my very best each and every day!
