I'm Mrs. Whitton, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be your child's 5th grade teacher.
This is my twenty-third year teaching at Lago Vista ISD. I taught 7th grade English Language Arts for nineteen years and am proudly starting my sixth year teaching 5th grade.
I grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts - Studio Art and Elementary English and Self Contained (1st - 8th) teaching certifications at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
My husband and I just live in South Austin with our five wonderful feline furbabies: Snopes, Finnegan, Junah Bombay, September, & Pepper Potts. In addition to spending time with my husband and babies, I love drawing, painting, journaling, reading, and listening to music (especially Classical).
One of my guiding beliefs is summed up in the quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: Instruction does much, but encouragement does everything.
I truly believe that every student has the ability to succeed. Through proper guidance and support, all students can learn and grow, but when given the encouragement to strive, take risks, and push past their limits, they begin to see that they’re capable of achieving more than they ever thought possible.
It’s important for me to really get to know my students - who they are as individuals, what makes them special and unique, and to know how they see the world. I want to know their strengths and struggles, what they’re really into and what’s truly important and meaningful to them. It’s then that I can tap into their motivations and strengths and help build their confidence. Belief in oneself is a powerful thing – when children learn that they have what it takes to persevere and overcome any challenge, they’ll know that their dreams are within their reach, and they can achieve anything they truly desire.
