Vietnam Overview

The Vietnam War was a very different war from what Americans have fought in before. Communism was spreading fast and the North side of Vietnam had already fallen to it and the South was next. This was considered the “domino theory” where every country that boarded a country already fallen would also fall to communism and the way the US wanted to stop this was “containment” to keep it from spreading even more than it already has. The US sent troops to defend the South from the communist enemies. Eventually there was no way the United States was able to win this war so they continued to draft more and more troops to avoid the humiliation of losing their first war in history. The draft enlisted men around the age of 18 to join the service no matter if they wanted to or not. Since there were more troops being deployed, that means there were more men being killed when the war should’ve been over a while ago. After the US and North Vietnam agreed to a ceasefire, the US left and the North quickly conquered Saigon, the capital of the South. This caused the country as a whole to experience their first loss. As the soldiers returned to their normal civilian life, they all had different welcomings. Some were treated with disrespect, some had a hard time adjusting and some came back like nothing changed.
