Additional Scholarship Opportunities
For some high school seniors, winter is a busy season of applying to colleges. Yet many students also face substantial challenges in continuing their education after high school. Are you familiar with scholarships that can assist English learners with financing a college education?
English learners are a diverse group, and not all EL students will be eligible for the scholarships below. However, these are some of the largest and best-known programs that can provide opportunities to change students’ lives:
Coca-Cola Scholars Scholarship
150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship.
High school seniors with a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA may apply online in August of their senior year until the October 31 deadline.
Gates Millennium Scholars Program and The Gates Scholarship
Gates Millennium Scholars Program supports the cost of education by covering unmet need and self-help aid for outstanding minority students with significant financial need. Founded in 1999, this program is scheduled to conclude in 2019.
The Gates Scholarship is a full college scholarship for Pell-eligible, minority, high school seniors. Scholarship recipients will support each other through technology-enabled communication. The first awards will be disbursed in 2018.
GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarships
Recipients are awarded a $10,000 scholarship renewable for up to an additional three years (up to $40,000 total per recipient).
Scholarships recipients are U.S. citizens who “demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship.”
Goizueta Foundation Scholarship
Every year, 25-26 Goizueta Scholars of Hispanic/Latino origin attending Georgia State University receive $10,000 per year toward college, or a full scholarship with housing and stipend, depending on the type of award.
Jack Kent Cook Foundation College Scholarship Program
30-40 students with financial need receive up to $40,000 per year (up to four years) to pursue any area of study at a four-year institution
Through the National College Match application, Questbridge helps “outstanding low-income high school seniors gain admission and full four-year scholarships to some of the nation's most selective colleges.”
In a unique model, Questbridge empowers youth to apply to highly selective colleges but does not supply the scholarship funds – instead, funding comes from the colleges themselves.
Western Union Scholars Program
WU Scholars receive $2,500 toward tuition or school fees for a degree program in STEM or business.
