Martin Robert is a Program-specific Associate Professor at Kyoto University in Kyoto, Japan. He is pursuing research on the metabolic function of E. coli particularly in the context of biofilms growing at the solid-air interface. His interests are centered on the dynamics and systems biology of this bacterium and projects utilize functional enzyme genomics, metabolomics and proteomics and imaging approaches to better understand biofilm functional development.
Martin teaches fundamental undergraduate life science, systems biology-related and data analysis courses as well as a course on Scientific writing and communication for students of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Martin obtained his B.Sc. (1990) and PhD. (1996) in biochemistry from McGill University in his native Montreal, Canada. This was followed by postdoctoral training (1996-2001) in a private pharmaceutical research institute, part of the Chugai-Roche group near Tsukuba, Japan where he worked on cellular aging and cytokine receptors. He also worked as project manager at Euroscreen, a biotech company in Brussels, Belgium (2001-2002). He was Assistant Professor at the Institute for Advanced Biosciences, a pioneering institute part of Keio University in Japan, the oldest private university in the country from 2003-2013. Prior to joining Kyoto University, in 2020, Martin was Associate Professor at the Institute for Excellence in Higher Education at Tohoku University. He taught biological sciences at the Future Global Leader (FGL) International Undergraduate Program including fundamental courses in biochemistry/cell biology and principles of physiology and systems biology.
Martin was also guest lecturer at Yamagata University (2009-2019).
