Study Tips and Tricks
If you have any questions or if you're unsure about any standard you're doing, don't be afraid to ask your course teacher or your mentor teacher. Nobody knows what they're doing either!
The type of music you listen to when studying greatly affects your productivity. When completing repititive tasks and art projects any audio is fine. However more complicated tasks and writing-based projects lyricless audio is reccomended.
The best genres include:
Lofi
Classical music
Instrumental music
Nature sounds
Video game soundtracks (they are designed to keep you focused)
White, pink, brown, and green noise
Forces you to study when you don't want to study
Choose a task: Select the specific task you want to focus on for the next interval.
Set the timer: Use a timer to set a 25-minute work session.
Work with focus: During the 25 minutes, work on the task without any distractions.
Take a short break: When the timer rings, take a 5-minute break. Get up, stretch, get a drink, or do something else to refresh yourself.
Repeat: Repeat steps 2-4 three more times. After the fourth "pomodoro," take a longer break of 15-30 minutes.
Recharge: During the longer break, engage in activities that help you relax and recharge before starting the next set of "pomodoros".
Repeat as needed: Continue this cycle of focused work intervals and breaks until the task is complete or you have achieved your study goals for the day.
Helps you remember your notes before the big exam
Pull out your notes: Review your notes for 30 minutes.
Take out a separate sheet of paper: Write down everything you can remember from your notes.
Take a different coloured pen: Write down everything you forgot from your notes using a different coloured pen.
Repeat the process: Repeat the process 2-3 times and it should help you retain information better.
Note Taking Method
Divide your page into three columns.
Column One - Recall Column: Write keywords for this topic in this column.
Column Two - Notes Column: Write general notes for this topic in this column.
Column Three - Summary Column: Write a brief summary of the topic in this column.
Forces you to stop procrastinating
3: Spend three minutes in silence and not engaging in any activities (aka PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE!). Use this time to identify the things you already know and the things you want to learn about what you will study.
2: Spend two minutes setting up your study material to mentally prepare yourself to study.
1: Spend one minute setting a goal for your study session. What do you actually want to learn?
Go study: You can do it!
Helps you use your study time effectively
Use this technique the next time you have completed a past exam:
Keep a tally of every question you have gotten wrong on your practice exams. Categorise each question you got wrong by topic.
Use this to decide what to spend the most time studying. Invest your time studying the topic you got the most questions incorrect in.
Memorise things easily
Imagine the layout of a familiar place. Eg: Your house
Imagine the things you need to remember along a pathway through the place. This will help you remember the order and content of what you need to remember.
Remember things
Create a rhyme for the rule you need to remember. Eg: 30 days have September, April, June, and November.
Fix your forgetfullness
Create acronyms to memorise longer phrases or rules. Eg: OILRIG (Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain)
