Industrial Training refers to professional experience that is relevant to professional development prior to graduation. All mechanical engineering students must gain relevant industrial training during the period of their engineering studies. Industrial Training is normally undertaken during the summer recess at the end of the fourth year.
Industrial training is a great opportunity for students to learn about the industry, to establish important contacts and most importantly, to seed the beginnings for a career in their chosen profession. Students get out of industrial training what they are willing to invest in the process. With a positive attitude, Industrial Training can be a challenging and rewarding experience.
Mechanical engineering degrees must include practical experience in an engineering environment outside the university. These help student to gain real world experience.
Industrial Training works to develop an individual's sense of professionalism by experiencing first hand the industry's culture and practices learning from professionals, their roles and responsibilities as active professionals.
Employers can utilize the Industrial Training period as an opportunity to evaluate students for future graduate positions. The companies can make use of services of trainees to execute small investigative projects, which may contribute to enhance efficiency and productivity of the system.
Mechanical engineering student must gain 3 months of industrial experiences at the end of their 4th year of study. This training will be of 12 weeks duration after the completion of final year project defense. This Industrial training will carry 6 credits of weightage.
The nature of the students’ work during Industrial Training relates to their studies, experience and ability. Eligible students register for the training in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KU and then submit their applications during early days of final year. Dedicated Industrial training facilitator has been appointed to facilitate students of each subdivision. The facilitator for the training allocates the companies to the students in consultation with respective companies. The department will prepare the roster of companies for industrial training. The relevant companies for the Mechanical Engineering students range from large manufacturing industry to small specialist organizations, service industries to government agencies, NGOs, INGOs, maintenance, energy sector and so on.
