Rio Tinto are an Anglo-Australian multinational and the world's second largest metals and mining corporation. With a gross annual revenue of $24.1 billion in 2019. They operate across six continents in around 36 countries. Most of their assets are in Australia and North America, although they also have operations in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Central and South America.
They produce iron ore for steel, aluminium for cars and smart phones, copper for wind turbines, "responsibly" sourced diamonds, titanium for household products and borates for crops that feed the world
in addition they produce gold, industrial minerals, iron ore and uranium and own and operate open pit and underground mines, mills, refineries, smelters, power stations, research and service facilities. They also use their own railways, ports and ships to deliver materials to customers.
The ISAL aluminium smelter in Hafnarfjörður in Iceland began operations in 1969. Bauxite, mined in Australia, is transported to Iceland where the energy required to smelt it into aluminium is cheaper, the resultant aluminum is used globally.
The ISAL plant produces 184,000 tonnes of high quality aluminium, with the lowest carbon footprintin the world, as 100% of the electricity required is generated from clean, renewable hydropower, supplied by the power company Landsvirkjun.
In 2019 Rio Tinto produced 326 megatonnes of iron ore, much of it from the Pilbura iron ore operations in the North of Western Australia which include a network of 16 iron ore mines.
