Assignment 3: Competency 1.3: Effective Communication.
Effective communication is the clear and accurate exchange of information that ensures mutual understanding between the sender and the recipient. Sharifirad, Rezaeian, Janzini, and Etemadi (2024) emphasize that effective communication entails correct understanding, making it crucial for the communicator to convey ideas clearly so the recipient grasps the message's nature and generality. According to (Journal) it is very clear that effective communication is important as it is the lifeblood of any successful institution. This essay will discuss three main indicators from the competency ‘Effective Communication’: adhering to Ministry of Education (MoE) protocols and procedures for communicating professional issues and needs, constructively and promptly communicating students' performance to students, parents, or guardians, and using a collegial and participatory approach to effectively perform and accomplish tasks and activities on schedule.
To begin with, adhering to protocols and procedures for communicating professional issues and needs is crucial for maintaining effective workplace communication and ensuring concerns are appropriately addressed. According to MoE protocols and procedures, as illustrated in (Appendix A), there is a specified communication channel that must be followed; teachers cannot directly report complaints to the SRO without following the established steps. These protocols are vital as they provide a clear framework for communication, establishing standard methods for conveying information consistently and understandably across all organizational levels. Additionally, they help mitigate the risks of miscommunication or unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards and protecting both individuals and the organization. Following established protocols saves time and reduces confusion by streamlining the communication process and minimizing misunderstandings and unnecessary back-and-forth. Moreover, these protocols demonstrate professionalism and respect for organizational norms, reflecting a commitment to structured communication practices and enhancing credibility and trustworthiness.
Secondly, it is essential for teachers to communicate constructively and promptly with students regarding their performance. According to Muhammad Younis (2021), constructive and timely feedback from teachers is crucial for enhancing students' learning (Appendix B). Feedback is a vital component in all learning contexts, as it improves learners' competencies, skills, and knowledge. Constructive feedback not only motivates students but also fosters their understanding and professional development by highlighting what they have done well and areas needing improvement. Additionally, it enables teachers to assess students' learning progress and achievements effectively. Parental involvement is also a key predictor of a student's academic success (Loges, 2003). Parents are integral to their children's education and are often involved in school governance. As the primary educators, parents nurture their children's development from an early age. Therefore, it is vital for parents to actively participate in school decisions and serve as leaders and representatives on boards and committees. Their involvement emphasizes home-based communication relationships and fosters partnerships among parents, schools, and community agencies.
Lastly, employing a collegial and participatory approach is essential for efficiently completing tasks and activities on schedule (Appendix C). According to Wentzel (2002), social interactions and relationships with parents consistently influence various aspects of school adjustment, including academic achievement. This approach entails encouraging student participation in group activities rather than independent work. Like other communication improvement methods, this approach has its advantages and drawbacks. Benefits include enhanced acquaintance between students and the promotion of knowledge and experience sharing, fostering collaboration among students. For instance, when assigning a collaborative task to students, they come together to merge their knowledge and experiences to solve the given challenge. Through group participation, students gain insight into each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which may not have been apparent before working together. For example, some students excel in public speaking, while others excel in research or writing essays, each contributing valuable skills to the group. This scenario illustrates the effectiveness of student communication and collaboration.
In conclusion, effective communication is foundational to achieving mutual understanding and fostering productive relationships within educational environments. As emphasized by Sharifirad et al. (2024), clear and accurate communication is essential for conveying ideas comprehensively and ensuring that messages are properly understood. This essay has explored three key indicators of effective communication: adherence to Ministry of Education protocols for professional communication, timely and constructive feedback to enhance student learning and development, and the implementation of a collegial and participatory approach to foster collaborative task completion. By adhering to established protocols and promoting constructive feedback, educators facilitate an environment that supports student growth and academic success. Moreover, encouraging a collegial and participatory approach enhances student collaboration and knowledge sharing, contributing to a cohesive school community. These practices collectively promote transparency, efficiency, and mutual respect among students, teachers, administrators, and parents, thereby enriching the educational experience and ensuring comprehensive support for all stakeholders.
