Good and Positive relationship refers to a healthy relationship that involves trust, respect, honesty, and open relationship between one person to another. Building a relationship contribute to cycles of responsiveness between people, that help improving both people’s relationship to the next level. As a KTC trainee, it is important to understand the importance of positive relationship with students, colleagues, parents, guardians, and everyone who contribute to the school. According to the KTC Pre-Service Standard, maintaining good and positive relationship with others is priority for trainees at KTC. This writing will discuss what I’ve experienced during my observation at BTC JSS on how teachers apply good and positive relationships during class, the three indicators of good and positive relationships, and how these three indicators being applied by teachers inside and outside the classroom. Therefore, this discussion will be supported by evidence I got during my observations, and published research which support this topic.
To begin with, “how teachers apply good and positive relationships during class”. This is when a teacher “greet students warmly, and consistently using their names in interactions, acknowledge and praise students for their behaviors and efforts, and to understand and meet students’ learning needs” (Archer, 2023) etc. During my observation I work with my TA Mrs Kavera Tamton, and I found that her relationship with her students is good and healthy. This is because, she knew her students well, addressing them with their names, and she praised them in a good manner. She’s so professional when she delivers her topic in class, walking around observing her students to make sure that they understand the topic during activities, and she make sure that her students are enjoying the class. However, she also states that “it was hard at first when building a relationship with my students, but I use formal chats with my student, to help them built their trust in me and to feel comfortable around me. (Tamton, 2024).
Secondly, good, and positive relationship’s indicators. According to (Casas Ferran. Sergiu Baltatescu. Irma Bertran. Gonzalez and Adrian Hatos., 2012), they state that students should satisfy with their learning lives at school, which leads to the indicators that I come across during my observation. The satisfaction of a student learning at school is one main priority that been practiced nowadays. However, the three indicators that I come across during my observation at BTC JSS are, Trust, Encouragement, and Respect.
Trust between students and teachers is essential for creating a positive and effective learning environment. According to (Vathana, 2023) ‘trust between students and teachers helps improve students social and emotional skills. Establishing trust with students is crucial for teachers. This helps create a safe space for learning. This is because when there’s trust, students will feel confident to express and taking risks, in class activities, and discussion.
Encouragement is the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope. Thus, when a teacher shows encouragement, students feel motivated to strive for success and overcome challenges. This positive reinforcement can boost students’ confidence and self-esteem, leading to improve well-being. For example, teacher approaching students who needs further explanation on the topic, and so forth.
Respect between a teacher and students also plays a significant role in creating a safe and inclusive classroom atmosphere. According to (Ferlazzo, 2019) ‘The reality is student respect teachers who they feel respect from them’. Therefore, when students feel respected by their teachers, they are more likely to engage actively in learning, participating and develop a sense of belonging. Respectfully interaction between teachers and students help build trust and rapport, which are essential for effective communication and collaboration.
To conclude, good and positive maintaining good and positive relationships between a teacher and a student inside the classroom will help develop a healthy, safe and effective learning environment. From what I’ve learned during my observation, I have finally come to understand why good and positive relationships with students is important, not only students but to people around you.
