Bob Barker was born Robert William Barker in Darrington, Washington. His father died when he was very young, and he lived on a South Dakota Indian Reservation with his mother, Matilda, until he was in 8th grade.
When Barker was in eighth grade, his mother remarried, and the family moved to Springfield, Missouri. He worked as a bellhop at Lake Taneycomo in the summer. He graduated from Central High School and went on to Drury College in Springfield on a basketball scholarship. After graduating from college, he worked at a Springfield radio station.
