initial ideas - proposal
Throughout the year I noticed I have preferred certain tasks over others. For example, I did not excel in 3D work such as the walk cycle or 3d modelling to the same extent that I wanted to and I found it took me more time to complete and therefore I know I wouldn’t have enough time to complete it in the quality I am hoping for. However, I preferred most of the 2D work a lot more, mainly as I had done a lot of 2d before and therefore it was more familiar to me. Therefore, I want to focus on 2D for my final project.
During the apply module I really enjoyed the process of creating the futuristic character design in the style of Arcane and feel that this specialist could be most beneficial and enjoyable for my final project in order to create something I am proud to exhibit. My idea for this project is to create two concept art pieces for a character design for Elvish characters based on the sun and the moon. This idea has already been lingering with me for a while so I’m going to take this project as an opportunity to develop and utilise this idea. I am also very inspired by space and often create space-inspired characters or themes in my work and style so I feel this project would be a good way of using this inspiration. The sun and moon elves are protectors of said places but want to connect with each other and use the eclipse's power to attempt this. However, the eclipse doesn’t last long enough to form the connection for long, so they need outside help to expand their powers indefinitely and be together. I also plan to elaborate and expand on this idea as I am researching further to create an idea suitable for an animation or storyline for a mainly tween audience but also adapted to be able enjoyable for fans of the fantasy genre. Having this story idea and idea of the audience I want to capture, will help me understand contexts and build relevant characters for this space.
I will need to be strict with my organisation to complete this project, I will be using Trello as I have before used it and it is helpful to keep everything together and easy to access I will also be using my physical planner to break down tasks in physical forms and as a backup just in case I am unable to access my Trello account. This should help me to keep on track and be realistic with my goals whilst including other things so I can be realistic with my time. I will present my pieces using mountboard in my space in the exhibition through character sheets that take into consideration style and using the correct canvas size to look presentable when printed, otherwise, I risk the piece looking pixelated and unappealing to the audience. If I get time, I also plan to create some sort of product to present a story to make the characters more likeable. This should also help it become more finalised.
I will use Google Sites to keep track of research and evaluate progress in my work. I will also use websites such as Pinterest to find references and inspiration, and Mila Note to keep a cohesive mood board and to keep track of my ideas and development. If I struggle in completing this project, I will create one finished character design instead of the two that I am currently planning on to have a final piece at the end. I am also going to use sketches from a sketchbook which I will present on my Google sites in the form of style studies, fashion experiments and life drawing to create the best-looking final piece that I can. This will run alongside my research. I am going to research a variety of topics that will help me expand and create my ideas which I will record in my sketchbook and Google sites. I want to continue to go to life drawing sessions so that I can create a fluid and anatomically accurate final piece and run that alongside my research portfolio. I think researching Space, especially with a focus on the sun, the moon and eclipses would help me be more accurate in my depictions of the characters and possibly their surroundings and contexts. I also want to research Celtic culture – including renaissance fair fashion, as it is often connected to elves and their designs, especially Tolkien’s designs as he was very influenced by the Celtic culture also. This is also why I’m researching Folklore and Greek Mythology as they have strong connections to fantasy and mythical creatures. Furthermore, I will also research DND and Bee and Puppy Cat as they are very similar to what I want to create and may help me with my designs. I am hoping that all these research ideas also lead me to other topics that might inspire me throughout the creation.
initial ideas moodboards
organisation
throughout the year, i have experimented with many different ways of keeping organised and planing and i found using both a physical journal and a trello worked best for me. i can therefore, plan out my weeks work through the trello at the beginning of the project and keep it updated throughout, but also use my journal in order to break down tasks by day and keep them organised and realistic around other commitments - such as work or chores . this worked best for me as i then knew exactly what i needed to do each day and also it helped reduce my stress and procrastination levels which i have been working on improving. Some weeks were defiantly more organised than others, but during term time i really wanted to stay on top of things. furthermore, Having a physically copy also allows multiple backups to be saved in case one or the other gets lost or inaccessible. i will also probably continue using this workflow in the future to keep me organised.
initial inspiration research
space and the eclipse
an eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and earth. there are three main types of eclipse: total solar eclipse, the moon is blocking the entirety of the sun- partial eclipse, when the moon only partly covers the sun - annular eclipse, when the moon is blocking almost the entirety of the sun apart from the ring around the edge ( as seen in the photo on the left). Eclipses sometimes appear as a annular and a total eclipse from different places. this is known as a hybrid eclipse. a total solar eclipse can last anywhere between 10 seconds to 7.5 minuets.
Solar and lunar eclipses are also often believed to signal dramatic natural and social events. many believe that an eclipse signals new beginnings and fresh starts but also could bring heartbreaking moments to help us evolve and grow.
astrology views solar eclipses as powerful cosmic events which often are linked to influence human behavior this is the main inspiration for the storyline of my project and how, in a fantastical world, an eclipse could affect space. Solar eclipses can have a noticeable impact on the structure and dynamics of the earth's upper atmosphere due to the reductions in solar radiation reaching the earth's atmosphere. it can also affect radio communications and navigation systems. However, these changes are generally temporary and localized to the region experiencing the eclipse and normally returns to it's normal state.
the moon and suns climate
researching the climate of the sun and the moon can allow me to change up the clothing that is suitable for said climate. eg, hot climate would be able to wear a tank and shorts whilst a cold climate would be wearing warmer longer and fluffier.
The moon has an average temperature of 120°c but plummet to -130° c at night. this is because the moon has no lunar atmosphere to insulate heat, which also earns that craters and major dramatic landmarks do not erode the same way they do on earth and leaves fixed pockets of darkness near the moons poles which host the moons most frigid temperatures With this in mind, Aelin needs to have fairly versatile clothing which can be adapted for both colder and warmer temperatures and regulates the heat. this would work differently to humans as they are adapted and evolved to regulate these intense temperatures but also incorporating this can help both Aelin and Cyrus be more recognizable as living/ based on the sun and moon. i can either use materials that are suitable for both hot and colder climates or i can make different iterations of clothing for different temperatures. Fluffy lined darker clothing is more useful in nighttime with colder temperatures whilst lighter coloured and textured clothing may be more useful in warmer temperatures.
Its no surprise that the sun is 15 million degrees Celsius at the core to only 5.5k Celsius on the surface. Ever 1.5millionths of the second, the sun releases more energy than all humans consume in the entire year. this is because the sun is made of plasma and gas, 92 percent of this gas being hydrogen which is held in the suns core by gravity which lead to high pressure. This high pressure means that hydrogen atoms collide with enough force to create a new element - helium - in a process called nuclear fusion. this causes energy to build up and increases the temperature. Therfore, cyrus needs to wear very light clothing, both in colour and in textures to regulate his body tempretures. hense his coloour pallette is overwhelmingly yellows golds and whites.
dnd
DND is a role playing team game which a team party is created in order to play. Players create their own characters, inspired by fantasy and mythical stories, in order to tackle the dungeon masters exciting storyline. Characters can be anything, but most relevent to me is the elf characters.
whilst elves are magical people, they are not entirely part of the world. they live in forest or natural places and love nature magic art music and poetry and appreciate goodness in the world. Specifically, the high elf can directly inspire the contexts and designs of my characters. This is due to the two most common high elves - sun and moons. Both of these can live up to 750 years, with slender figures, pointed ears and hairless body. On one hand, sun elves have bronze skin with copper, black or blonde hair. Moon elves however have blueish fair skin tone with silver, white , black or blue hair with blue or green eyes with gold specks. Therefore i will communicate this in my own designs because even though they aren't DND characters, it's an already existing stereotype that will ensure audiences can easily recognize them as sun and moon. However, high elves are They are both between 5ft to 6ft tall (similar to humans).
Tolkien's depiction of elves
in the lord of the Rings trilogy, elves are vital due to their history with the ring and the positive past they had with them. the elves are the good side of history whilst Sauron is the bad side of history and is considered a dark and corrupted lord. they were the first ones to forge the ring, the first children of alluvial and thought to be the first sentient races in all of Middle Earth (before the dwarfs and ents were established) They are very important to the structure of tokiens world and are both mysterious and powerful.
The look of the elves is developed gradually throughout the franchise. they are mainly described to be pale pale-skinned with dark hair and grey or blue eyes. However, another type of elf called the vanyar has blonde hair and blue eyes. Rarely, hair colours could also include reed/brown as well as silver which also only occurs in one of the families (the royal house of the teleri). In addition, hair is considered important to elves and all of them have beautiful hair which is prized, therefore most of them wear it long (men and women). Elves are also tall, and taller than most humans. this is used for the power and nobility, as well as their strength being universal across men and women. Their ears are slightly pointed and have more leaf shapes which allow them to have better hearing (and sight/balance) Overall, Tolkien's elves are beautiful and majestic beings that are youthless and ageless, joyful, wise, artistic, strong and fiery in the heart.
Fashion-wise, the elves also have the most exquisite outfits in all of Middle Earth. often sporting long flowing robes made of silk or velvet-like materials with high neck collars, or long silk dresses with wide sleeves or lacy gowns. Otherwise, some leaves have to wear thick clothing, especially those who live in the forest. therefore they wear a velvet yet sturdy material with most simple outfits such s tunics over leggings which also allows them to blend into their surrounding.
celtic culture and clothing
tokien and his depiction of his world, more importanly his elves were highly inspired by celtic legends and languages. He made use of welsh phonology and grammar for his elvish language 'sindarian' and many of his stories and characters have been proven parallel to those of celtic stories- including gandalf with merlin and Galadriel with the lady of the lake as well as close parralels of the hero Aragon with his magical sword and king arthur with his sword. therefore it seems necessary that i do some basic research into celtic culture and mythology aswell as explore some of the fashion to integrate these traits into my own pieces.
Celtic culture is diverse, not just in the amount of distance it spans. its generally considered to refer to the languages and culture of ireland, scotland, wales, cornwall, the isle of man and brittany - also refered to as the celtic nations. Ancient celts were a widespread group of poeple and were the largest group in ancient europe and were never a single empire - rather a bunch of people with shared language and cultural beliefs.
The celts are known most for their colourful clothing - often woolen or later tartan and these clothes showed their ststaus and importance within the tribe. the usual male attire would be a tunic and a belt alongside a long coat and trousers and fastened by a baleful ( clips that would fasten the trousers and almost considered an early belt). Women wore long dresses, often made out of cloth and leather with a gold embroidered outer layer, fastened with brooches with wooden or leather sandles with small straps and jewlery was used to symbolise social class and were often of high craftsmenship and artistic quality. If you were an important member of the tribe, you would wear a neck Torc of gold silver or iron decorated with patterns ( which was a type of choker necklace)
sun and moon FNAF
whilst researching for this project I rediscovered a similar concept of using the sun and moon as the basis of a character concept within Sun and Moon from Five nights at Freddys. The character is a major antagonist of the FNAF security breach game and later appear again with a third personality refered to as eclipse. They are an anamatronic humanoid with two personalities (later three) that changed during day vs at night. The characters also act as a mascot for two candy brands 'sunnydrop energizing candy' and 'moondrop sleepytime candy'
In high light levels, sun is activated. it follows gregory (the maon protagonist of the game) around unless hes behind the security desk. if sun reaches gregory, it'll pick him up and carry him near the large ball pit next to the segmented tower. if these are knocked over, sun will proritise fixing them rather than gregory. Therefore, sun is seen as the good character as he does not want to hurt or jump over gregory, rather keep him safe. Sun is also seen to block lightswitches and the security desk to stop moon coming out. therefore when the lights are turned off, it undergoes a somewhat painful transformation into moon who is therefore an enemy to gregory.
During the low light level, Moon is activated. He is violent and stalks gregory crawling like a spider and swimming through the air on a bungee system connected to the ceiling to jumpscare gregory. However, moon wasn't supposed to be so violet, this happens due to glitchtrap invading moons coding - as he was originally programmed to put the children in the daycare to sleep before being deemed too scary.
Eclipse was introduced in the Ruin DLC of security breach and in the balloon world minigame and exists as a combination of both sun and moon forms in a damaged state. their behavoir is shown as maic, franctic, problematic and short tempored and don't seem to care about the daycare in the same way sun and moon do. its speculated that it cme to be after sun and moon merged themselves together but it got infected by a ruin virus while they were in daycare.
Bee and Puppy Cat
I want to use a similar storyline idea from bee and puppy cat for the resolution for the storyline. therefore I want to take inspiration from research on the topic through their temporary work assignments which is a similar concept i want to explore if i create a full blown animatic at some point. Bee and Puppy cat is an animated webservices that later went to Netflix which follows the life of bee, a 20 something year old who recently got fired by her cat café and cannot seem to keep a job . Therefore she relies her companion, Puppy cat literally fell into her life one day after she wished fr another living character to take care of.and together they complete jobs given to them by temp-bot to help out people in space. Originally the series was posted onto YouTube onto Frederator cartoon hangover channel in 2013 before being reboot and released in 2022 by netflix who made three episodes in the beggining of it's series which retells the original and then 13 episodes which are brand new. Overall, bee and puppycat is a huge inspiration to me and this project and helps reflect the space themes i am exploring.
character building - sun and moon space elf characters
alongside research, I also started to create ideas for my characters based on information I had learnt from said research. I knew I wanted to integrate both what I had researched about DND elves and Tolkien elves specifically and my research helps me to do this more in-depth than the knowledge I had already and will help my characters hopefully look more cohesive by the end of the project. I have also decided on the names of Aelin and Cyrus. Aelin is of English Turkish origin meaning - moon, light and desire. Cyrus is a Persian and Greek origin name that simply means sun. even though these names are not necessarily picked from a Celtic or similar language, I feel these names still best represent my characters and I prefer them to some of the, in theory, more cultural names of the same meaning.
i also decided to give my characters cohesive colour palettes to the thing they represent. Cyrus is going to have a very light pallet consisting on gold, white yellow and oranges. Aelin is going to have a darker palette consisting of Dark blues, purples and blacks but also silver. these ensure the characters also contrast each other and are recognisable for their attributes. they will also have symbols on them - such as tatoos and clothing embroidery, that will further emphasis the themes.
Aelin design creation
I did some sketches using Pinterest references to gather inspiration for Aelin's character designs. I originally wanted to give her big sleeves for her main design, however, I think i am going to use shorter sleeves and create tattoo designs based on the moon and adapt this design for colder climates for an alternate iteration. however, I did like the idea of the fabric with silver embroidery with both spirals and relevant designs as well as maintaining a fairly formfitting but long dress to make her look more mystical and elegant. Overall, I will bring some of these ideas into my further designs
the main thing I wanted to interpret in this reference collage sheet for Aelin was to ensure the colours consisting of blues silver white and black, were cohesive and consistent and I could visualise what I wanted her to look like. I love the braids and the navy of the fabrics which correlate all across the design, this will maintain the vibes I want to come across as anyway - light but also mysterious and spacey.I think this sheet will help me in many ways throughout the design stages.
this was my first draft for Aelin and I have aspects I think worked well and also some that did not work as well or I could improve upon. to start with, I want to try out the black hair vs the white hair and what works best. this will either highlight the lighter areas but may also wash her out more, whilst the black does give more contrast against Cyrus' colour palette too. therefore experimenting with both can help me decide what works best. However, I changed some things too from the reference sheet, especially the skin tone which I muted more to look more natural. the first skin tone was more blue than I would like and it made her look like an avatar, not an elf. I did manage to integrate the tattoos into the design and I decided to use an arm cuff to break them u a bit but also for contrast. I am going to create an up-close tattoo design so that they look identical in each design and I can take a bit more time on them for them to look better. I also added to the texture using a circular splatter brush in different tones of blue to look glittery and holographic which is probably my favourite part of the piece due to how successful it was. Overall, I think this is a good start to work from. but I want to try to make the piece more simple ( and possibly animation friendly) which will make the design more pleasing and easy to read and interpret
i created a reference sheet to ensure that Aelins tattoos stay consistent . i also hope to incorporate these into Cyrus' design - possibly through his clothing design or an extra object - in order to add the idea that these two are, in fact, connected and not just two separate characters. One thing i did change to this sheet was the placement of the chest tattoo to the lower arm on the right as you couldn't see it amidst her necklace design and as it was an important one due to it's depiction of the eclipse - and acts as foreshadowing to how they are finally able to connect to each other so i didn't want it to get lost. I also really liked these spiral tattoos ad felt it was reminiscent of galaxies. Overall, this is one of my favorite parts of Aelins design.
silouhette experiments
I also did some silhouette experiments to ensure that she was more balanced in her design and that her anatomy was accurate. This also helped,e figure out what shape language communicated her personality the best. I wanted Aelin to be more shy and reserved - especially in comparison to Cyrus and therefore, big bold and triangular shapes did not work as they gave her a more confident look. therefore I rounded her hair and softened her body to give her this look. I also changed up her dress design further when I got to colouring to give her more of a mysterious look instead of a stylish and bold fishtail dress; which can be seen below. Overall, I did like the more angular hair design as it give more shape to her but it did not work in this context and also would not allow me to give her the braided hair I had given her in the reference sheet so I went for a more straighter design
dress style itereration 1
dress style itereration 2
i originally did a cocktail/fishtail inspired dress for Aelin - this is a good design shape-wise and gives her a kind of more diva-look which whilst is useful to know for future designs, i wanted Aelin to give a more mysterious and shy vibe which contrasts with Cyrus' more confident design which is how i interpret the sun and moon as personality traits and the symbolism of the colour's. therefore I opted for a more flowy fabric dress which gives her the more floaty vibe that I want. I also decided that the chain on the dress ended up getting lost in the design and is more distracting with this dress rather than how it helps defining the dress and waist on the cocktail dress and makes it look more elegant and fancy. For this specific design I am going to use the floaty design for this specific design but could also encorporate the other in other designs of i revisit this idea in the future.
this was my final design for Aelin in this project. I also gave her A hood design for colder climates on the moon due to the dramatic change of temperature that it can experience and to keep her protected. i also gave her a simple head turn around which shows some of her hair design better. Overall my favorite part of the design is the tattoos that i designed for her as i feel it ties in with the moon thing and allows her to show more details. I also really like how i made her dress shimmery, which ties in with the moon theme but also allows her to look non-human and magical. I also like the colour palette and i think my picks worked well for each part. And overall i am very happy with how it came out. I do want to improve on some things in the future though, such as my knowledge of clothing and how it works and comes together and also brush up on my body anatomy in some parts. this would have elevated my piece to the next level without sacrificing the simplicity that she has. her style also is very cohesive with that of Cyrus (see below) and i think it works well. i feel i was very inspired slightly with the arcane style which i had looked at in my past character designs which also works well in this universe. In conclusion, i do hope to explore this character further in the future but i do think i will stay pretty true to this design.
cyrus design creation
Similar to Aelins design sheet, i wanted to create this in order to create a well rounded and cohesive design and references that give the right vibe or appeal to what i am trying to communicate main thing i wanted to interpret for Cyrus, again was to ensure his colours consisting of gold yellows oranges and whites stayed consistent and start a basis of what i wanted him to look like. whilst i do feel that this board is slightly less successful than Aelins, i do still feel it represents the sun and that is very obvious. i most like the subtle hints of this meaning through the celestial look. overall i think this will help me well with creating my characters
first digital draft and colour iterations
For my first draft of Cyrus, i really just went for it and created my idea of what i wanted Cyrus to look like. and i was very happy with how the sketch turned out. However, on further looking i felt that the colour palette was too dark which meant the theme of 'sun' got lost in its design apart from the design on the waistcoat. Therefore, i decided to lighten it up a bit using a brighter colour palette. I think this gives him more of a non-human look and actually gives him a glowy look - reminiscent of the brightness of the sun. i am happy with this design, and therefore it does not change much into the final design apart from the face which i decided to give a softer look to make him look kind and fit more with aelins updated style.
Cyrus iteration 1
Cyrus iteration 2
both of these iterations are very similar to one another. The one on the left however, is a lot rougher than the one on the right and therefore I was not happy with it, therefore I revisited it erased everything I was unhappy with and cleaned it up. a major problem was the collar and tie. I wanted an unbuttoned shirt with a loose tie but it just looked messy as I did not have enough understanding of how a collar worked and my references were not what I needed. In the second, I decided to make both of them loose but also neater. Cyrus is an equivalent of a DND 'high elf' therefore is 'attractive' and 'divine' so the changes made most sense to communicate this in his design.
I also removed a lot of his hatching which I had added for texture which brightened the whole thing up and made him look more glowing. furthermore, I added more volume to his hair which also balanced out the proportions more and gave him a more luscious effect than I wanted. overall, I am very happy with this design and in many ways, this is a major improvement on the initial draft and the first iteration and I learnt alot in the process as I had limited knowledge on male characters, therefore i am glad I challenged myself.
i didn't necessarily need to create iterations of cyrus's silohette as i was pretty happy with it from the getgo, but i wanted to make a silohette of the final design to ensure that the shapes dont get lost in each other. i honestly think that just this silohette gives the personality and look of cyrus that i wanted alone - via its angular shape and confident stance so i think this design works really well and i am very happy with it
This is my final design for Cyrus in this project. I decided to give him a guitar with the same designs that i used for Aelins tattoos in order to further tie their designs together and act as 'foreshadowing' to their story line together which ended up being my favourite part of both designs.I also again, included a face turn around , which whisilt was not as important as his hair hasn't necessarily got any detail in it - i felt was necessary for symmetry. Overall, i really like how Cyrus came out and i think he works really well.I like his outfit, especially the white waistcoat with the sun pattern and the slight shimmery effect i did on his trousers which give him a more magical, non-human effect and also the structure of the face works really well. i do also think this design however would have benefited from some further exploration about how clothes look in order to create a more detailed piece, for example the clothing seams and texture which would have elevated it to the next level. but i do think i will continue to use this design as a base for continuing exploration into his character.
These are Both of my Sheets next to eachother - which is how they will be presented in the show but mounted on black mountboard. Both Cyrus and Aelin work really well together and their character sheets that i am using are mirrored so people can instantely tell that they are connected and part of the same story and i really like how this is portrayed. it also shows their contrast more which also shows they are connected. i think they also show their retrospective themes well. One Major thing i would have liked to improved on was my mounting of my Cyrus print. I should have done some more research into how is best to mount work using double sided sticky tape as i had never used it before and drastically underestimated it. I did everything right for in order for it to be straight by measuring the borders each side and blue tacking it and making marks where it should be to make sure it looked straight but when i taped it, i definetly used too much tape so the paper was hard to remove when it was slightly wonky and therefore resulted in an air bubble in the paper alongside a ripped corner. I think i recovered it as well as i could and i also improved on my technique in my other print which is flatter and straighter. However, this did not effect my actual art luckily so hopefully does not distract from it and i dont think its so noticeable in unnatural light. Other than this i am very happy with how they look printed and am so ready for them to be on display.
