Pāhana ʻĀina Lupalupa Informational Science Texts

Pāhana ʻĀina Lupalupa books were originally written in Hawaiian, then translated into English. Each grade-targeted text set, from papa mālaaʻo (kindergarten) to papa ʻekolu (third grade), contains two types of books that can be read in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and English.

Puke ʻIke Kahua ʻEpekema/Big Ideas Science Book is a grade-level text intended to be read-aloud by the teacher to the students. This text provides the background knowledge and big content ideas necessary for students to master grade-level science content. Reading this text aloud should engage all students in strategic actions for developing comprehension through active listening and text discussion.

Puke pae heluhelu/leveled texts are intended to be read by students. These texts are meant to be matched to a student’s independent or instructional reading level. This allows for students to develop reading behaviors through a personalized learning process. On their own and through a small-group guided reading lesson (lead by their teacher), students can increase their knowledge of reading behaviors across the systems of strategic actions for literacy learning.
