ABOUT
Letter from the Poʻo
E nā hoa a me ‘ohana, welina mai ke aloha,
Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i presents a reimagined summer learning and teaching experience for our haumāna, hoa kumu, and ‘ohana aligned to our vision of ‘Ōiwi Edge.
Kauluhala Summer Academy - A Space for Discovery
Kauluhala weaves together the essence of Kauwela, our warmest time of year and the cool breezes found in the hala groves of Puna. The name Kauluhala centers the cultural significance of the Pūhala to the ʻāina of Puna, which is famous for its hala groves — Puna paia ʻala i ka hala, Puna, with its fragrant walls of pandanus blossoms. Kauwela, our warmest time of year, lifts the weight of the school year and creates a space for refreshing, joyous learning, an atmosphere of agentic, fun discovery for both haumāna and kumu. The name, a play on “ulu” for growth and exploration signifies the Pūhala grove, a place where keiki grow connected to ʻāina, to Puna, to lāhui, and to our kula, Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi.
Grounded by its past and inspired by our future, Kauluhala, formally known as Kula Kauwela, continues a promise to inspire passion for learning, excellence, and generational and global responsibility. Our team of dynamic educators, near and far, have designed NEW experiences that uncover the magic and hidden possibilities of summer learning for our haumāna in grades K-12. During the summer, these experiences will continue to compliment and challenge our reality, grow interests, ground us with kuleana, and prepare us for the now and into the future.
Filled with refreshing and joyous learning, Kauluhala dedicates itself to creating a space of discovery, growing ‘Ōiwi Edge in a thriving ecosystem where learners explore their passions to discover and ‘auamo their kuleana as kanaka ‘ōiwi - to steward our resources, mālama our ‘āina, and nurture themselves as current and future problem solvers of our lāhui.
In our inaugural year as Kauluhala, leading and directing this learning are two highly respected educators. Known amongst their colleagues as role models and leaders with a deep commitment for nurturing and developing our haumāna, who, as kumu themselves during the regular school year, have also taught and led in the summer space as members of our passionate kauhale. Please join me in celebrating and welcoming them on a new journey with us as our summer administrators,
Mr. Alan Kinoshita - Kauluhala Program Administrator, Grades K-8
Mr. Keali‘i Akina - Kauluhala Program Administrator, Grades 9-12
We invite your keiki and ʻōpio to join us this summer for a journey of passion and discovery! Please register early for course(s) as spaces fill quickly. If you have any questions or manaʻo regarding our summer program, please call (808) 982-0033 or email kauwela@ksbe.edu.
Me ke aloha ʻimi naʻauao ē,
(Mrs.) Lisanne Kekuewa

nurture one’s ability to communicate and present effectively and with pride,
provide conditions where students are able to find reliable and accurate information; and analyze, synthesize, and make inferences from information and data; and,
have FUN!
LEGACY OF KE ALIʻI PAUAHI
Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop was the great-granddaughter and last direct royal descendant of Kamehameha I. During her lifetime, she witnessed a rapid decline of the Hawaiian population. With that decline came a loss of Hawaiian language, religion, customs, and most of all…spirit.
Despite the dire condition of her homeland and its people, Pauahi envisioned a brighter future for Hawaiians. With the support of her husband Charles Reed Bishop, Ke Ali`i Pauahi articulated her vision in her last will and testament. She placed more than 375,000 acres of inherited Kamehameha lands in a perpetual endowment with one purpose: to create schools to improve the capability and well-being of Hawaiians.
In 1887, three years after her death, Ke Ali`i Pauahi’s vision became reality with the opening of the Kamehameha School for Boys. Seven years later, the Kamehameha Schools for Girls was established. In the years that followed, students acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to weather the changes brought about by western civilization, helping Hawaiians find their place in the new society.
Today, Kamehameha Schools is the largest private landowner in the state of Hawai‘i. Income generated from its residential, commercial and resort leases, as well as diverse investments fund the schools’ educational programs and services.
Kamehameha Schools currently operates K-12 campuses on O‘ahu, Maui and Hawai‘i Island with a total enrollment of 5,400 keiki. It also operates 30 preschool sites enrolling 1,500 keiki. KS subsidizes a significant portion of the cost to educate each of its students. Although a modest annual tuition is charged, nearly 60 percent of preschool and K-12 families qualify for need-based financial aid.
In addition to its preschool and K-12 programs, KS also serves thousands of additional learners by providing educational opportunities through summer enrichment programs, community education programs, financial aid and post-high scholarships.
Christian and Native Hawaiian cultural values and practices and service learning are integral to KS programs both on campus and in the community.
