Learning language and culture
Before engaging in all the activities, such as teaching practice, classroom observations, and sightseeing, on the first day of our stay in Indonesia, the university organized a language class for us. This class was focused on learning basic Indonesian words and phrases commonly used in daily life. It was an insightful session that helped us better understand the local language, making it easier for us to communicate and navigate through our day-to-day experiences in Indonesia.
In addition to the language lessons, the class also introduced us to various aspects of Indonesian culture. We learned about the traditions, customs, and social norms that shape the everyday lives of Indonesians. This cultural orientation allowed us to gain a deeper appreciation for the country's rich heritage and provided us with the necessary knowledge to engage respectfully and meaningfully with the local community during our time there.
Overall, the language and cultural introduction provided a solid foundation for our stay, ensuring that we were well-prepared to immerse ourselves in both the academic and social aspects of our exchange experience in Indonesia.
Conference
We were invited to attend and listen to discussions in a university conference on two important topics: Silence in the Classroom and The Use of Technology in the Classroom. The event featured two guest speakers who shared their insights and expertise on these subjects.
During the session, the first discussion focused on the role of silence in learning environments, exploring how moments of quiet can impact students’ concentration, engagement, and overall learning experience. The second discussion highlighted the integration of technology in modern classrooms, examining both its benefits and challenges in enhancing education.
The conference provided a valuable opportunity for us to gain deeper knowledge and perspectives on these educational issues, as well as engage in thought-provoking discussions with fellow attendees.
Sit in
In the Sit-in Project, we, the four exchange students from Thailand, along with two exchange students from the Philippines, participated in classes with other students at Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII). This project took place during the final week of our program.
During this experience, we engaged in various activities, including class presentations, lessons, self-introductions, and discussions with other students. The classes covered different fields of study, such as Architecture, Engineering, and English. However, the lessons were not always strictly related to these subjects. Instead, the primary focus was on conversations and communication with fellow students in the classroom.
The Sit-in Project lasted for one week, providing us with an opportunity to interact, exchange ideas, and immerse ourselves in the academic environment at UII.
Touring
This activity involves the buddies taking us, the students, on tours to various locations during every holiday. The purpose is to explore different places, experience local attractions, and learn more about the culture and history of the area. Each tour was carefully planned to ensure that we could visit both popular and hidden gems, giving us a deeper understanding of the region.
The tours were not only fun but also educational, as we had the chance to interact with local people, taste traditional foods, and discover the unique aspects of each place we visited. This experience allowed us to immerse ourselves in the local way of life and broaden our perspective beyond the academic environment. Overall, these excursions helped create lasting memories and fostered stronger bonds between the students and their buddies, enriching our exchange program in meaningful ways
