Sociology Field Trip

Aloha

Every year, for over the past 16 years, I bring my Konawaena HS Sociology students consisting of 12th graders on a field trip to the Keakealani Bldg to conduct Court Observations (in Family Court and the Third Circuit Court). Aolani Mills has been our liason who makes this happen, on some occasions, she provides a Q & A session with various people in different roles within the judicial system. This field trip , will yet again, be an opportunity to truly galvanize the concepts from our curriculum in regards to Deviance and Social Control. More so, it will be the week prior to prom and a month before graduation (our friends working as Probation officers, Sheriffs, and Judges do an amazing job of showing our seniors the consequences of poor decisions).

Third Circuit Court Judge Ronald Ibarra addresses the students after they viewed a felony domestic violence sentencing. He goes on to sharing his path from being a Konawaena Alumnus to his last year as a judge. The message he shared was, "..don't ruin your future" after fielding specific questions about the case and his background and experiences.

Probation Officer and Program Specialist for the Third Circuit Court, Aolani Mills, shares the many job oppotunities there are in the judicial system, stresses the need for more local hires, and gives a straight-foward talk on why Judge Ibarra mentioned not to "ruin your future".

Our students also take advantage of the opportunity to dress appropriately :)
