James Baldwin
James Baldwin was an American writer, playwright, novelist, and poet. His work within civil rights influenced the African American community along with the LGBTQ+ community. Both of which were heavily marginalized at the time.
Notes of a Native Son is a collection on ten essays about his father and their relationship. The book takes place in the 1940s and early 1950s, and was published in 1955.
Published in 1963, The Fire Next Time contains two essays about race, religion, and the American dream. It addresses controversial issues that were even more controversial at the time making it an important piece of literature.
Published in 1952, Tell it on the Mountain discusses the life of a young man. It reveals his relationship with his family and church which is a direct reflection of Bladwins life. The story like his others is controversial yet refreshing.
