KM4Dev is a self-organizing community supported by volunteers who help coordinate shared spaces, activities, and tools.
Governance in KM4Dev is light, transparent, and participatory — designed to keep the community open, inclusive, and self-sustaining.
This page describes KM4Dev's governance as of October 2025.
KM4Dev’s Superadmins act as the community’s technical and institutional custodians, ensuring the security, continuity, and sustainability of its digital and administrative infrastructure.
They collectively safeguard access to core systems — including the Google Workspace account, the km4dev.org domain, and key platform credentials — and ensure that KM4Dev remains functional and recoverable even as community roles rotate.
Currently, Sarah Cummings, Pier Andrea Pirani, and Cesar Robles serve as KM4Dev Superadmins.
Their complementary roles include:
Sarah Cummings – Oversees governance continuity and Google Workspace administration; also serves as Chair of the Core Group.
Pier Andrea Pirani – Manages digital infrastructure and acts as liaison with the DGroups Foundation, supporting collaboration with the platform hosting KM4Dev’s main conversation space.
Cesar Robles – Manages KM4Dev’s legal and financial hosting through Helvetas, which holds the km4dev.org domain and the community’s financial account.
Together, the Superadmins provide long-term custodianship across KM4Dev’s technical, financial, and operational foundations.
Since May 2004, a volunteer Core Group has helped steer, coordinate, and sustain the community.
Acting as KM4Dev’s informal steering committee, its members contribute their time and energy to ensure that KM4Dev remains an open and well-functioning space where members can connect, collaborate, and learn together.
Help shape KM4Dev’s strategic direction through collective reflection and dialogue with the wider community.
Coordinate the management of KM4Dev’s shared platforms and tools (Dgroups.io, website, KS Toolkit, KM4D Journal, etc.).
Support the organization of community events and initiatives.
Address operational or technical issues as they arise.
Document meetings and decisions transparently — see the meeting notes.
Meets monthly online (KM4Dev members may join as observers).
Shares meeting notes openly for transparency.
The Core Group welcomes members who wish to contribute actively to the stewardship and evolution of KM4Dev.

The KM4Dev Volunteers group brings together members who facilitate and maintain the community’s main online conversation space — the KM4Dev Global Group.
Each year, the KM4Dev Volunteers Steward runs an annual moderation poll to coordinate the monthly facilitation schedule. Two KM4Dev Volunteers are typically assigned each month to:
Approve and organize incoming messages;
Keep thread titles clear and conversations collegial;
Encourage engagement and help maintain a welcoming tone.
This group is open to all KM4Dev members who wish to support community facilitation or technical upkeep. We are always looking for new volunteers to help facilitate our community.
The Knowledge Sharing Toolkit is maintained by a volunteer Editorial Board made up of contributors from across the international development ecosystem — including UN agencies, INGOs, the private sector, and independent practice.
While composition may vary over time, the Board values diverse experience and perspectives in knowledge sharing. Membership is open to anyone aligned with the Toolkit’s mission, with a strong interest or background in knowledge management preferred.
Editors support the Toolkit by:
Reviewing new methods, tools, stories, and external resources
Responding to contributor feedback and edit suggestions
Coordinating outreach and content campaigns
Guiding the Toolkit’s strategic direction
Ensuring consistent quality and shared stewardship
The Editorial Board follows a lean, collaborative governance model, designed to evolve as the community grows. You can read the Editorial Board Charter to learn more about how the Board works, including roles, workflows, and rotation cycles.
