Knowledge Management for Development (KM4Dev) is a global, open, volunteer-driven community of practice that connects practitioners, researchers, and facilitators exploring how knowledge and learning can improve international development and humanitarian action.
Founded in the early 2000s, KM4Dev has grown into the longest-running global network dedicated to knowledge management in development β bringing together thousands of professionals who exchange experiences, reflect on practice, and co-create new insights that strengthen impact across the sector.
KM4Dev occupies a distinct and enduring niche: it is the only global community that unites people working on knowledge management across international development and humanitarian action.
At its heart, KM4Dev explores how organizations and networks generate, share, and apply knowledge to achieve better outcomes β through approaches such as knowledge sharing, learning systems, and communities of practice.
Over its 25 years, KM4Dev has remained a living laboratory for collaborative learning and innovation. Several features make it stand out:
Radical self-organization: Unlike many communities anchored in a single institution, KM4Dev operates as a true grassroots collective. Its governance, funding, and direction come from volunteers, enabling decentralized and emergent action.
Bridging research and practice: KM4Dev provides a vital link between KM researchers and on-the-ground practitioners. This bridge is reflected in initiatives like the Knowledge Management for Development Journal, where members connect academic thinking with real-world experience.
Openness and diversity: The community is deliberately inclusive, bringing together voices from both the global South and North β from large organizations to small NGOs, policymakers, consultants, and independent thinkers. This diversity of perspectives β actively fostered through practices like inclusive event design β is a core source of strength.
Human connection at the centre: While most exchanges happen online, KM4Devβs spirit is grounded in relationships β strengthened through in-person meetups, online Knowledge CafΓ©s, and spontaneous collaborations that span regions and cultures.
Adaptability and innovation: Throughout its history, KM4Dev has continually evolved with new technologies and ideas β from wikis, to AI-powered toolkits, to digital knowledge expeditions β keeping the community vibrant, creative, and relevant.
Challenging power and privilege: KM4Dev has also become a space for reflection on the decolonization of knowledge, examining who creates, shares, and benefits from knowledge, and how more equitable approaches can take root in development practice.
In 2025 we celebrate 25 years of KM4Dev β a milestone in collective learning and community stewardship.
KM4Dev has been made possible not only by the energy and commitment of its volunteer community, but also through the generous support of several organizations over the years. Their contributions have helped sustain facilitation, technical infrastructure, and inclusive participation across regions.
