The School of Interdisciplinary Studies (SoIS) was established by the University of Kalyani in the year 2019. Presently located at the S. N. Bose Innovation Centre, SoIS is home to three new M.Sc. courses, namely, Data Science, Genome Science and Nanoscience & Nanotechnology.
The unique combination of these three Choice-based Credit Systems (CBCS)-based job-oriented regular M.Sc. courses with industry-conducive curriculum comprising intensive practical and training under the same umbrella is the first-of-its-kind in the state of West Bengal, and even in India.
The university is expected to be benefited from its active collaboration with the surrounding institutes like IISER Kolkata, NIBMG, Kalyani Medical College, Kalyani Govt. Engineering College, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, IIIT Kalyani, and also the other academic institutes situated in close vicinity like Bose Institute, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Indian Statistical Institute, University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University and others. These new courses will open several opportunities to further extend the collaborations through exchange of faculties and research staffs. The university is also having some industrial collaboration in this context.
The students from various academic disciplines, who will get chance to study in these proposed M.Sc. courses will learn about the most happening ideas of respective areas of Data Science, Genome Science and Nanoscience & Nanotechnology. They will also get the opportunity to be taught by experienced teachers who are working in these fields for several years. Moreover, the curriculum of the courses has been made with equal blend of academic and industrial requirements, with the support of globally acclaimed renowned scientists, faculties and industry people. Hence, after getting degree, the students may opt for joining industry or go for higher studies.
